Very unlucky result for us. 26 IMPs when spades broke 4-0.

And bidding to 6S is so appropriate unless W decides to call 1N holding 2 jacks opposite a passed hand and warn them of the spade loser! East's action was aggressive but understandable. West - not so understandable.

I did not focus on the actions at the other table. East's double is interesting. I don't know what to say about West's 1NT call. Misguided might be the best thing I could say. I don't know what it was attempting to accomplish. That call (or perhaps all the activity of EW) may have convinced NS to stay out of slam, but it is hard to tell.

 

Obviously, without opposition bidding, you want to get to 6♠.

It seems harsh to blame West's 1NT for this result: it looks like N/S missed the slam because the auction tempo worked badly for them, with North wanting his partner to show (or bid slam with) a heart control and South judging his hand too poor to justify doing so with only 2nd round control. I doubt they missed the slam because they thought West's 1NT promised a defensive trump trick against a spade contract: an out and out psyche seems plausible given the known lack of E/W values. Whether 1NT was a good idea is another matter, but what it did achieve was a cramped and murky auction for the opponents, stopping in 5 of a major; this rates to be a good outcome, with the unexpected trump trick beating the 5 level probably more often than the opponents missing an unlucky slam.

Not a huge fan of the double. Partner is a passed hand, and we have defense.

 

I would have passed with West and bid 2♦ over anything. 2♥ was a blind shot that worked.

 

Alfredo thought 1N warned him of a bad spade break and he knew he was missing a heart card. I suppose thats a reasonable reason to stop.

I doubt 1NT had anything to do with it; everyone knew West was just fooling around. Versace tried everything short of standing on his head to get partner to cuebid hearts and he was probably disgusted when dummy came down.

Versace and a couple of kibitzers commented to me that N/S should have been in 6.
