My style does not include opening nt with 5 card spades, I do open 1nt with most other shapes, including 5 card hearts.

The rationale; it is important to tell partner I have the boss suit, if the opponents come in, we can compete in spades.

Is this thinking flawed?

There may be a rebid problem when you have balanced strong notrump hand with a five card major. For that reason, many players like to open 1NT when they hold a balanced hand of 15-17 even if they have a 5 card major. Some limit the 1NT opening with a 5 card major to times when the major is not strong.

The 1NT opening also serves to protect the K on opening lead.

I am sure that many would open the East hand 1NT.

Both approaches are fine. IMHO allowing either 5cM works a bit better, but I'm sure the difference is small.

On this hand yes, but what do you do if pd bids 1NT and you have a 16/17 count? Stuffed, eh!

Given the alert of 2C they probably play 1nt response at least semi-forcing... so bid 2C. There is some very narrow range where responder has 8-9 and no fit and bids 2S and maybe you miss some game (if not playing BART or the like) but in exchange you can find a bunch of light games when pd has 4-card spades and 6-7 count with shape, and you will also play better partials quite often.

I agree with awm.

It's a matter of style and system. Clearly if you haven't got a way of bidding the hand after 1-1NT then the 1NT opening makes more sense. With some partners I'd be more or less forced to open 1NT on this hand. With others, opening 1 would be fine.
