lcsmw
Over 1d, 1nt overcall, partner has 5h and 4s and 8 hcp. What conventional bids are available?
blackshoe
Whose partner? What conventional bids has his partnership agreed? If you're asking if there's a conventional bid that shows the type of hand you describe for opener's partner and is sensible on the given auction, I'd say "probably not", but I'm not an expert on every convention people have come up with. phoenix214
Depends on what methods you play, X is for penalty so we dismiss that. The question is what you use the rest bids for, With a partner with 0 discussion all bids probably are NFB or the thing you do usually for 1x-(1y/2y)-2z. What i have played in this position is something like Cappeleti. 2♣ is onesuited. 2♦, ♦+M, 2♥-Majors, 2♠, ♠+minor. I think you can use any normal defense to 1NT with some modifications here as well probably, but it depends as well on the 1♦ opening, does it actually promise real diamonds or it is just better minor
lcsmw
standard. longer minor with the exception of 5c and 4d.
RSClyde
My partner and I (who play mainly matchpoints) play DONT over their no trumps. (every suit is that and a higher and double is a single suit) We extended the use to no trump overcalls as well. This of course means that you can't double for penalty. I've been happy, lots of times you can't double every possible run out even when you do rate to beat 1nt. Furthermore you can convert partner's single suited double when your hand is right. Free
I like to play the following over 1m-(1NT):2m = support, 4+m2Om = 44+M2M = natural, NF Whenever 2Om has come up, I had a good result. I haven't missed the natural 2Om call.

JLOGIC
I think 2 of the other minor as majors is better (you are less likely to have a raise after a 1N overcall, if you have one LHO is likely to have shortness and ability to compete anyways, and you always have the option of 3m which is a much better preempt). I also think there is a lot of merit to 2C being majors regardless of which minor is opened. That said, it doesn't matter that much which you play, but it is definitely important to have a bid for majors (imo).
