It is a big deal to make the round of 16 period, esp if you start as a low seed since you have that much harder of a path to get there, and something they should be extremely proud of if they lose today. I just meant it's not a good mindset before the match to be really happy you got to the R16 (IMO). If you are thinking you've already done great to get to the R16 and you are outclassed then you're more likely to lose. I didn't mean to act like they haven't achieved something great, they def have, but once they are there they gotta be in the right mindset to make the R8 and beyond. Ecstasy can be just as bad as tilting (I think this was a bols tip).

Edit: I guess my point is while you're still in the event, your perspective should be you have another really hard match, and another one after that and that etc till you win. This keeps your emotions grounded and prevents you from even subconsciously having the feeling that even if you lose today you did better than you expected so it's alright. I think if you have that feeling and everyone is congratulating you etc it dulls your killer instinct and fight and is not a great mindset to be in. Being super excited just to be there rather than thinkin hell yeah I'm playin awesome I'm gonna beat Gromov and eveyrone after that and win cuz I'm playin so well is not good imo. After the event is over for you is the time to soak up what you have accomplished and bask in the glory. But maybe this varies person to person.

I think you are absolutely right especially as non-pros. I was particularly concerned that beating Rosenthal would be seen as their crowning glory, particularly as we'd lost to that team so heavily in March. But the team's heads were clearly in the right place when they sat down against Kasle and I'm sure they will be against Gromov.

I shouldn't have stressed the round of 16 as the milestone. I should have said that they will be really excited to beat two top teams with the opportunity to beat a third.

But I think your advice is really spot on for all of us who only achieve such success so rarely.

WTG Chris knocking off two giants.

Markleon and I battle on tomorrow on day 2 of the fast pairs. Didn't play particularly well today but that seems to be the nature of playing bridge at 5.5 mins/ board.

Had a fun time here but it's time to go home tomorrow night. Nice to meet a few forumers I hadn't met previously.

Oh my god Gromov kicked our asses six ways til sunday. I'm a little drained, but I can't really say that I'm disappointed, just that I wish I played better today, especially since my partner was playing very well if I gave her the opportunity to succeed.

Well done Chris, you repped the BBF very well. I just looked at the brackets, and my word Gromov is indeed stacked. The Hamman-Diamond scoreline of 66-54 was also shocking, at less than 2 IMPs a board - must have been some great bridge at that table.

Congrats and very well done run. Superb.

Hope to see some hands on forum that you found tough.

Again Congrats.

Hamman vs Diamond seems weird score....very unusual I would bet, very rare.

Just wanted to say that my regular BBO partner with whom I played maybe 10k hands together just won Spingold main event.

He is Wojtek Gawel (redds on bbo). Congrats to him!

I feel great as well as we practically learnt to play bridge together before he took a shot at going pro with one of the big Polish names (Rafal Jagniewski). I knew they have world class potential but winning Spingold and showing it to the world is whole different story.

Amount of work they did in last 1.5 year is staggering (especially system work). Winning their first big US event is a dream scenario coming true :)

Oh, and they had most difficult draw possible beating Bermuda Bowl winning Netherland pairs (Zagorin), legendary Nickell, Bocchi-Madala and Buras-Narkiewicz (Gromov) in the semi and Grue in the final.

Was great to see and play against csgibson, mbodell, Phil, gnasher, and I'm sure several others.

Made the finals of two open events, so pretty pleased with that even if the finishes weren't super high. The LM Pairs was my first open overall, so now I know what it takes to do well in those events, and I feel like this is just the beginning. Pretty exciting week for us, even if we didnt play super well in the non-open events we entered.

Very cool to see this team play so well against many formidable opponents. I remember getting up before dawn here in the U.S. to kib Grue, Lall, Bathhurst, Zagorin, Wooldridge and Hurd in Veldhoven. I suspect there were more than a few bridge players in Poland who were still up at dawn today!
