TylerE
Is this really in I/A? One of the first steps to improvement for a novice is to stop doubling on balanced merde.

Free
I wonder how many points Nige1 will give to Dbl.
PhilKing
I wonder how many points Nige1 will give to Dbl. I haven't quite figured out the system, but I'm guessing seven. That's about the yardstick for anything the equivalent of stabbing yourself in the eye with a compass. Jumping off a tall building probably warrants a four, so that would equate to 1♠ or 1NT on this hand.
CSGibson
pass. Not tempted with 1/2 of a quick trick, 7 major suit cards, 3 cards in their suit, and only 11 HCP opposite an unpassed partner.

Of the non-honours you have more "good ones" than "bad ones" (5 and 6 are neutral). So it's a good hand. Moreover, you have 13 cards! You may not have noticed that the year is '13, and the date of 24/7 (or 7/24) makes 31 when you add them up, and that's the reverse of 13! Maybe you forgot to take all this into account.

On those rare occasions when they fold, I usually ask them if they were dealt two cards.

ggwhiz
I also agree that Nigel will give a x 7. Any takers anyone? If double gets 7, 1♠ gets 8 but I'm betting on 3 (for double) and 4.

neilkaz
Still unanimous. ArtK78
What is a "free poker league"? Is it played without money? If so, what reason is there not to play every hand?Because you are trying to win. There are two tournaments played each night. You start with 10000 chips, and the blinds go up every so often - usually about each 18 minutes or so. When you are out of chips, YOU ARE OUT. The last person standing wins. Much like bridge, we play for ranking points. The longer you last in the tournament, the more ranking points you get. Also, the bars at which we play usually give out gift certificates to the winners. Also, by doing well you qualify for regional and national championships. At the national championships, the winners get paid entries into World Series of Poker events. Check out worldtavernpoker.com.
Vampyr
Check out worldtavernpoker.com. Interesting. But it seems that you don't get a lot unless you are one of the winners of the national championship, and even if you do qualify, if you don't win an entry to the WSOP you are seriously out of pocket just from attending the national championships. Anyway when I go to a poker tournament I pay an entry fee and get a prize if I do well. It seems to me to be a lot more fun this way, but YMMV. By the way, if there are no entry fees, where does this league get the money to buy the WSOP entries?

By the way, if there are no entry fees, where does this league get the money to buy the WSOP entries? The bars where we play pay $50 per night to hold the games. The bars benefit by having players attend who purchase food and drinks. Last night, for example, there were 40 players at the poker game at a bar located in a local bowling alley. I had dinner there (I don't drink), and most of the players either order food or drinks or both. The bar comes out ahead, and the league makes $50. There are literally hundreds of games around the country each night, so the league does pretty well. Note that I live near Atlantic City, so there are casinos available if anyone wants to play money poker. Plenty of people are happy to play free poker.
