Play this method

Recommended Posts

I would double 2. If it then goes (2) - P - (P) I would have to be at the table to decide whether I want to bid 3. I suspect I would pass it out.

This is the problem with playing these "either or methods". Including both majors with a minor suited possibility is very poor in my opinion. The majors are so important in competing that they deserve a bid for themselves.

Is 2 pass or correct? If so, I would do that.

It might not play very well if it goes all pass but I will still be in a better position than if I had bid 3. By inference I am showing a hand worth a raise to at least 3 so partner may choose to compete with 4 if they raise hearts.

For me, X here shows values, some diamonds, and a willingness to sit a penalty double. If you give me a little more (e.g. the K) then I've got enough for this. That way, if it comes 2-P-P back to me, I know partner has clubs - so I can then compete.

Without this agreement, I bid 2 and hope partner's not bid on 4=5 majors.

I don't like it. Partner may decide to compete in 3 over 3 thinking I am singleton or void in and can trump enough if his suit doesn't have the top honours etc. Now I show up with a doubleton and only 2 :angry:

When playing either/or methods, a common and practical solution is to use a double as a relay to ask partner to show their hand type. This works for the one-suiter call in Capp/DONT as well as for 2-suited methods like Asptro. How do you currently have your double defined?

We don't :ph34r:

My partner plays this system and having no strong preference (landy). I've been happy to play it

and until we have time to go through the details, work through the problems as they come up.

I seem to change my defence to NT every month or with every new partner.

I would bid 2S. If you trust partner, you don't need to worry about them overcompeting (they shouldn't be bidding 3S without very good reason, they know you know how many hearts you have).

Yes, if 2 shows clubs.

You are playing a system where (1N) X is a transfer to clubs or both majors.[hv=pc=n&s=s94h82dqjt93ckjt2&d=w&v=0&b=8&a=1nd2d?]133|200[/hv]2 is a transfer to hearts, would you bid 3 here?

So East psyched a transfer to ? Did your side buy the psyche? How did the bidding continue and what was the final contract?

If you double as a relay and West competes to 2, Overcaller could continue with (for example) Pass = 4 hearts; X = 5+ hearts; 2 = black suits; 2NT = minors; 3 = clubs only. On this hand, it would be interesting what East did next having heard partner's explanation. It would not be a bad idea to discuss interference with your partner in more detail if you are going to continue using this defence.

Double = 10

Pass = 7

2 = 0

3 = 0

I don't believe double is a relay. It should show, of all things, diamonds. With the relay hand, pass the transfer, see what kind of a mess they make of it, then double for takeout if appropriate on the next round. Had they bid a natural 2M, then double should be for take-out.

On this hand, worrying about whether partner has clubs or not is an excercise in futility. Put it this way, if partner does have clubs, it ain't our hand (we can't even be sure of beating a grand slam and 5 will go for a monkey more often than not), and if partner has the majors, just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Double gets ten because if they finish in no trumps, I want a diamond lead (or rather I don't want a spade lead). Pass gets seven, because at least it prevents a fiasco. 2 gets zero, because it shows spades, so bidding it on xx is somewhat perverse. Bids like this should definitely not be pass or correct, particularly here. Actually, everything should get a zero, since we are playing a crackpot convention without having discussed our continuations.

this is one of those situations where making a rational dec ision is difficult

without knowing the rest of partners options because it is just as important

to know the significance of what p did NOT bid as it is to hear what they bid.

For example i noticed you did not say p promised CLUBS or MAJORS. Could

the x mean a RELAY to 2c (for potential 1 suited hands)????

IF the bid means specifically clubs OR majors I see little reason to get involved

since it looks unlikely we have a good club sac at even and if p had both

majors defending 2h is probably better than playing 2s. If the bid could also

be 1 suited hands X of 2d looks good since it should also imply no major

suit interest and caters to the possiblity p has clubs dia or spades 1 suited hand.

IMO Pass=10, Double = 9. 2 = 5. Here, a possible interpretation of calls is:

  • Double = (lead-directional or penalty interest).
  • Pass = (or nothing to say).
  • 2 = cue-bid: High card raise (both black suits).
  • 2 = Pass/correct: support with tolerance.
  • 2N = Artificial enquiry with game interest somewhere.
  • 3 = Pass/correct: good support with tolerance.
  • 3 = splinter (both black suits).
  • 3 = splinter raise (both black suits).
  • 3.. = Pre-emptive (both black suits).

Thanks for bumping this, it reminds me to chat with my partner on the way to the club this morning.

I was hoping someone had played these methods and could offer advice (other than don't play it), I didn't really

want to turn this into a general discussion on your favorite method.
