If we pass partner will never play us for 17 points. ahydra Double is typically played as takeout of spades with extra values. With an 18-19 type hand usually you just pass, partner passed over 1S and the opponents are unlikely to be psyching so it's just better to defend than get involved with no known fit. IMO the question is just whether we want to bid 2C or pass here, they both seem like pretty appealing options (our hand with chunky suits should play fine at the 2 level, but there is some risk of turning a plus into a minus since we also have good defense vs NT, and they might even start doubling us on a really bad day). Personally I think 2C is best, if LHO is going to bid 2D Or 2S I don't want to get into the guessing game again later. Usually 2C is 5-5 but hopefully my compensating strength is enough.
