Yep, as I thought I need to rearrange my thinking in this spot. I doubled eventually worried about 2S-3S-AP and thinking 'what's the worst that can happen?' Apparently (2)-Dbl-(3)-4-(P)-P-(Dbl)-AP off two, -300 against nothing is...

And that's because partner's 4 bid was the sane thing to do?

This was the full hand:

[hv=pc=n&s=sa8hk9843dj82ck95&w=sjt94hq2dkqt5cqt6&n=s7hat6da9643cj432&e=skq6532hj75d7ca87&d=e&v=e&b=6&a=2sd3s4dppdppp]399|300[/hv]

I couldn't really fault partner for 4 (although probably dbl has something going for it) and agreed in the post-mortem that I was probs a bit light but I really thought it was a lot closer than the poll suggests! E.g. If the A was in any other suit it would be clear to bid; any other vul I would surely pass.

While it may not work out any better---this hand is a much safer balancing x than

dirext----the opps are vul and if the bidding goes 2s p 3s p p both opps are weak

since they didnt try for a vul game------------- the direct x has a much greater risk

vs reward--lho is unlimited you could be facing a xx and a sledge hammer awaiting

you and you have very few values to compete on the 3 level not vulnerable does

not mean invulnerable.
