2D/2H/2S in 4th seat

Recommended Posts

The key for any opening bid in fourth seat is that you must expect to go plus by opening, as any minus loses to the players who pass it out. So whatever you chose for your bids to show in terms of shape, your strength must be such that you expect to make it if partner has a reasonable share of the outstanding high cards. Thus a natural weak 2 will be about 6+ to 6 1/2+ tricks in fourth position, regardless of vulnerability.

This also applies to the ranges for one bids. In the first three seats, it may pay (as part of a system designed to do it), to open a moderately shapely 8 or 9 count-- but regardless of system it can't be right to open it fourth hand.

I'm used to play these 12-14 with exactly 6 card. Extra result is that if opener rebids his Major (after a 1M opening) without jump, he has 15-17HCP or 12-14 with at least a 7 card (which compensates for the HCP).

We need a good and simple meaning for 2d/2h/2s in 4th seat, we play polish club with weak 2d= diamond+major, 2h= majors, 2S=weak 6 card.

We need another meaning to these bids in the 4th seat, any suggestions ?

Something like acol strong two might be the best solution, although I am sure few would really try this idea.

I like 2M in 4th pos = 6 cards, 14-16.

There are several advantages to the 14-16 range:

1. if partner does not have game-invite values, you end in 2M rather than 3M.

2. Without it, you bid 1M 1N 3M and partner has little information for 4M decision. With 2M=14-16, responder can bid 2N invite asking for shortness (or length) to evaluate game better.

3. 1M 1N 3M = 17-18 and more likely to make if responder is weak.

4. 4-level splinters with 3 card support for difficult to find slams
