flytoox
With your partner's hand, I would pass 1S. But the question you asked is 8-10 or 6-8. This is an entirely different question. What do you think your partner should bid over 1D with? S-QxH-JxxxD-QTC-Qxxxx Should he pass? No. You think he should bid 1H. Now you bid 1S. Should he pass and let you play in a 4-2 fit? Should he bid 2D and risk another 4-2 fit? How about bidding 2CLubs which is forcing? Nope, too rich for my blood. That leaves him with one response... 1NT. So 1NT has to include the yucky hands with 4 hearts and no spade fit. What if partner held.... S-QxxH-KJxxD-Qx C-Qxxxx Now the auction goes 1D-1H-1S... partner has the three card fit to an honor, but clearly pass is wrong this time. Here I would bid 1NT again. So, I am looking at 1NT showing between 6-10 points, because sadly, I see no other way to bid either of these misfit hands. If you open "sound" bids, you might make the jump to 2NT over 1S show 10-11 hcp, to narrow the meaning of the 1NT rebid.
pbleighton
"I sit south, hold: S: AKXX H: XX D: AJ9XX C: AC I opened 1d, pd 1h, i rebid 1s, pd 1n, i leap to 3n. question: what is the scope of 1n in this sequence? I think my 1s is at most semi forcing, pd keep bidding, so his hand should be 8-10, so i bid 3n. but it turned out that his hand is: S: QXX H: JXXX D: QT C: QXXX i think pd should pass my 1s. any comments?" My two cents: 1) With this hand, I agree with you . Game is very unlikely, P has 3 card support with an honor, so 1S is a decent place to play.2) The 1NT rebid normally shows 7 points (and your partner's hand is only worth 6, IMO), but if he held: S: XX H: KXXX D: QT C: QXXX he should rebid 1NT. Gerardo
I'd bid 2D if you have an agreement or otherwise understanding 2D there is not to run from 1NT, but to keep the bidding open (v.g. very high chances of NOT being passed).Else, I'd bid 3D, it's a much better bid than 3NT, IMHO. Shows your distribution better, and game can be 5D or even 4S with the right cards in partner, SHOW your hand and let HIM take the decision, he's better informed than you.
