aguahombre
IMO, this hand is not about methods. It is about judgement. It is about whether it is an opening bid, whether some level of preemption will be worth confusing CHO, or whether we can recover best from a pass and the likely aftermath. I think we will land on our feet if I open 1S and partner thinks I have a 1S opening bid. I wouldn't consider it a light opening bid, just a strange one; so I don't care if pard will expect more facecards. Let's see where it goes. And, if she responds 2H, she will eventually get a chuckle when dummy hits the table.
Jinksy
It seems from some of his other threads that Jinsky is playing the Fantunes system (2-level openers are natural and about 10-13 points). Playing that style, 2♠ you should strongly consider opening 2♠. Not with this partner. It would be an automatic Fantunes 2S.
Jinksy
For what it's worth, I'm a fan of 1♠. What does partner want from an opening bid that I'm not offering? Good playing strength? checkGood defensive strength? checkSafe rebid? checkMultiple first round controls? checkGood prospects for game in either major? check It's hard to imagine any auction where I'm going to be embarassed by my hand.
keylime
I don't know anything about Zar points. Does that mean that I'm not allowed to open 1♠?Doesn't mean you're disallowed from opening 1. I was writing from the view of what the general normal grouping of bridge players would open. I gave this hand to the local club here in South Florida, and got a wide range of answers as well. In addition, if one opens 1 here, and there's no major suit fit, you're driving towards 3NT and this will be the dummy. I would feel awkward tabling this dummy. The other thing I'm considering is the splits on this hand. Clearly we'd strongly prefer declaring, but I'm trying to think ahead in the auction as well. For a limited bid setup, 1♠ is for me standout.
