I recommend playing this second double as penalty. Otherwise it is too easy for East to psyche 1 with a diamond fit.

I'd bid 2 here to show a good passed hand and raise partner's 2 to 3.

If I was not a passed hand then it is more difficult, and I'd probably bid 3 directly.

cheers

With standard agreements, I'd consider this as the other suits (so a correct bid). But like cardsharp mentioned: with such agreement it's too easy for opps to psych our suit. That's why I also play this as penalty, so we can discover their psych

Second double is for takeout. No, you don't show a preference for clubs here, if your partner lacks hearts, she will bid clubs. There are other ways to handle this situation when you have spades and your RHO psyched a spade, but there is not a good way to show the two off suits and modest values besides the responsive double.

i don't understand why this would be for takeout... a responsive double only applies when they bid and raise a suit, or at least that's pretty much always been my understanding... doubling the 2nd bid is the clearest way to expose what is probably the most common psych

as for 1nt being natural here, to me that doesn't make a lot of sense on frequency alone... 2 bidding ops, with 2 suits (unless a psych) and me bidding a natural 1nt?... i don't think that occurs nearly as often as having support for partner's supposed suits... on the hand jilly showed i'd bid 1nt and feel good about whatever partner did... if i was stronger i'd bid 2... i've never heard of 2 here being game force, but i have heard of (and played) it being natural, as phil said

There are 2 ways to play this double.

1) Penalty, showing a S suit

2) Responsive for the other 2 suits

If you play it as 2) you show a S suit by bidding S at the appropriate level. You lose out on the penalty X. Most players don't think this is a big deal, as the 1S bidder, if he has psyched, almost certainly has support for his partner's opened suit.

I have played it both ways with different partners. I prefer method 2) but would not press the point if pd greatly preferrred method 1)

As I understand it, and how I play with most partners, I play X as showing EXACTLY 4 of the suit and bidding it myself as showing 5+.

I also require a few values, usually at least a reasonable 6 count to do this
