sceptic
Just lately I have made several dumb bids whilst asking for a suit stop on the way to 3nt after a minor suit agreement, can anyone explain how they work properly as I appear to be totally in the dark what I am doing wrong Thanks
badderzboy
Hi Wayne, This is one of me faux pas too but there are two ways of doing this :- You can either stopper show or stopper ask - I personally prefer to ask rather than show. You also promise to play at the 4 level if no stopper available. You probably already do it with Fourth suit forcing as a NT rebid promises a stopper in that suit but assuming the bidding is 1♣-3♣-? If stopper showing then 3♦ shows a stopper in Diamonds and asks partner to effectively show the lowest of the majors they can stop. If they show ♥ and you can stop spades you bit 3NT overwise 4 or 5♣ 3♥ shows a stopper in Diamonds but asks about Hearts and so on. If stopper asking 3♦ normally shows stoppers in the majors and ask partner about ♦ then partner bids 3NT and is protected per se from that suit lead. paulg
Steve has covered most of the points well. I think most people probably play to show stoppers as this is also consistent with bidding when you actually have slam interest, that is, rather than interest in 3NT you may have started cuebidding and you will show this on the next round. So, generally if there is one suit unbid then a bid in this suit asks ... 4th suit forcing. If there is more than one suit unbid, then show stops. The same philosophy can be used with interference, so 1♣...(2♣=majors)...3♣...(NB)3♥=shows a heart stop, asks for spade stop for 3NT 3♠=shows a spade stop, asks for heart stop for 3NT Cheers p

Fluffy
You bid a suit where you have values (stoppers) normally. there are 2 exceptions: bidding the only suit opponents had bid (cuebid) this shows a strong hand, and one of partner priorities should be to bid NT if he stops the suit. Note that this works ONLY when 1 and only 1 suit has been bid by opponents, if they bid 2 you should cue the one you have values in. when you bid a new suit with jump, for example 1♣-1♥2♣-3♠ now you don't show any stopper, but singleton on the suit with ♣ (splinter) partner should bid NT with some honnors there.
