croydonman
My father, who is on a dial-up connection, (and doesn't have much patience with computers) has occasionally found it difficult to log on. I'm on broadband and don't have a problem.I think it occurs when the number of people online is high. Is this a known issue? Anyone else experienced it? Great program though. Keep up the good work. inquiry
Do you mean connecting to internet at all, or connecting to this site (BBF) or the online gaming site specifically (BBO). I use dial up a good percentage of the time and never have had a problem... sure the BBO gaming site sometimes clicks for maybe 40 seconds before I am connected, but that is it. croydonman
Thanks for your response.I meant BBO. It takes about 30 secs with the 'waiting for response from server' box and then gives up with a message like 'could not connect to server'.However no probs tonight and there were over 1200 logged on so not sure what the cause might be. fred
Thanks for your response.I meant BBO. It takes about 30 secs with the 'waiting for response from server' box and then gives up with a message like 'could not connect to server'.However no probs tonight and there were over 1200 logged on so not sure what the cause might be. Trying to ensure that all of our members always have goodconnections is one of the most challenging problems that weface (same goes for all online game developers). There are 4 basic reasons why you might have problems: 1) Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) is having a bad day. 2) The company that hosts our server is having a bad day. 3) One of the (likely many) computers that is on the pathbetween your ISP and our server is having a bad day. 4) Something is wrong with the software that we havewritten (either the software on your PC or the softwarethat runs on our server). Uday (mostly) and I have spent a great deal of time andenergy to make sure that 4) is not an issue. As far as wecan tell, the way the software is now we will be OK untilwe reach roughly 2500 simultaneous logins. We are alreadyworking on a redesign that will allow us to go well beyondthat limit. Hopefully this will be done before we get closeto that number... If 1) above is the problem then you will also notice thatroutine Internet activity like going to web sites or checkinge-mail is sometimes slower than "usual" or does not workat all. If this happens a lot then I suggest you get a new ISP. The company that hosts our server seems to be prettyreliable for the most part, but they have had a few baddays in the last couple of weeks. That could well be thecause of the problems you have had. All I can say is that if we decide that this company is not providing us with aquality of service that is satisfactory to us, then we willswitch to another company. If 3) is the problem (as it often is when these sorts ofthings happen) there is not much we can do. There havedefinitely been some general Internet problems duringthe past 2 weeks or so. Hopefully the Internet will becomegenerally more stable in the not too distant future. Hope that helps. csdenmark
A very fine explanation from Fred I think - but I think there are one more point. That is our own computer. Please be sure your own computer always is optimized. You do that by running your application DEFRAG regularly. Using dial-up you need more often than by broadband. SCANDISC is also a part of what you can do yourself to be sure that from your end everything is working best possible. Before I got ADSL I ran DEFRAG every day before connection - made my computer just as stable as today where I no longer need that. hallway
A couple more points in respect of his own computer - 1. Tell him not to have an Instant Messenger Service running concurrently. I got rid of Yahoo Messenger altogether - solved a # of issues. 2. If he has Upgraded his Virus Scanner recently get him to check that bits of the old one haven't been left behind - can cause a lot of stress when online gaming. Tell him to persevere - all good things come to those who strive and BBO is the best on the Net. B)
croydonman
Just wanted to say a big thank you to all who replied - especially Fred - your informative response shows how much you care about end-user satisfaction. If only I got the same level of service from the various commercial (non-bridge) software providers I have to deal with on a daily basis... Needless to say there have been no further problems since my post so I guess we'll have to put it down to a few gremlins who had their day in cyberspace but have now hopefully been quashed. Off to the online store now to show my appreciation.
