Molybdenum

P - 1

2 - 2

2NT - 3

Very impressive auction, PhilKing.

Spiral Scan ( following identifying shortage ) replacing K-ask is like smart phones replacing dumb phones .

EDIT: But North dealt, therefore East will open 1C and West responds 1S . Thus, if East becomes Captain, as in your auction, he won't know if partner has 4 or 5 cards .... and can't count to 13 with certainty .

Oh lol. Never mind.

1(natural or 12-14 balanced)-1(spades)

1NT-2(inv+ 5+ spades)-2NT(max with 2 spades)

3(nat)-3(nat/values)

4(non specific cue)-5

5-?

This natural (in my warped mind) auction gets close though. When West makes a grand slam try, East could sniff out the hand on a good day, or at any rate raise 5 to six.

Very impressive auction.

Particularly impressive if the 8 is black. I would open the East hand with a weak NT and not even have hearts in the running - although I could probably post an imaginary auction to 7 if I wanted to. It is amazing what a warped mind can come up with with a specific goal in mind.

Warped or not:

Playing 5 card majors and a strong notrump I think it is just good Bridge with no specific goal in mind to open the East hand 1.

I have some elaborate rules when to treat a strong 4 card major as five and it has served me well.

I am not claiming I would necessarily bid these pair of hands to 7 at the table but 1 is a very good start.

Yeah, I'm looking at 6NT as well:

- 1NT

2 - 2

2NT - 3 (5, 4cm - no spade support)

3 - 4 ( shortness - good clubs)

4 - 4

4 - 6 (obviously we have slam interest, and I have the cards, but can't cuebid any more)

6NT (should make when 6 does - although I admit to rolling the dice a bit at MPs)

With a 12-14 1N:

1N - 2

2-3

3-4N

5

(3 agrees clubs, usually denies 3 spades, and shows a heart control; 4N is RKCB.)

After that, west might guess that 6N is better missing the Q, especially at MPs. 7 is unfindable; both East and West are in the dark about partner's red suit lengths.

This is a curious hand, you can make grand in 3 strains as the cards lie, clubs isn't one of them, despite being your only actual fit :). 7S and 7NT both make (as well as the more obvious 7H) as South has 3 clubs and the K. I won't post my auction, we had a system mixup and played in 3C :(

The old ("ignorant", according to Mikeh) NMF would just get us to 6NT.

1C-1S

1N-2D!

2N-3C...2N showing in addition to only 2 spades, a maximum. If responder wanted to know about a 4-4 heart fit, he could bid them (forcing) at this point, but he sets clubs as trump for now.

We then find out the clubs are not solid and settle for 6N, not having any major-suit jack asking bids --but, with a max opener she must have either the diamond king for double stops and allow 4-2 spade break, or the jacks to get us to twelve tricks.
