Any interest in having another go? Would you have preferred to overcall 1♠ on the first round? If so, would it make any difference to what you would do over 5♦ now? aguahombre
Double first.Pass now. With the other hand from the other thread on whether to overcall or double with 5-4-4, I would double again against 5m if the auction were the same. With this one, they have made the last guess, partner has not shown any cards by doubling over there, and I don't know whether we can beat six or go down 500 or more. Fluffy
I prefer to bid 1♠ with 54 majors at the 1 level, but 5404 with bad spades makes it closer. I can live with the double. Pass on next round is obvious
ggwhiz
1♠ followed by double. Gotta pass if I doubled first but I prefer the above approach against 2, 3 or 4♦ also. May well end badly but I can't be shut up.
gnasher
I'd have another go. It's only 4 IMPs if I'm wrong, and it's not hard to construct hands where we would make game.

There could be a blue card lurking. I am certainly itching to double again. I don't know what I would do IRL. Passing doesn't seem obvious to me, despite what I said above. gszes
I'd have another go. It's only 4 IMPs if I'm wrong, and it's not hard to construct hands where we would make game. agreed and another thought is I am not happy with having to lead to this hand. While itlooks like the opps will have trouble making 5 my lead might give it to them. In the longrun it is probably less expensive to have p show their long suit and take our lumps there.Opps probably have a huge fit and probably so do we. IMO x=10 p = 8 all else ughhhhhh Im curious as to what people will lead if they pass (i would have less concern about lead ifI x again and p leaves it in and would lead a top club. Hanoi5
1♠ first.
aguahombre
Some people prefer to get three suits into play with their first call. Others prefer the double to be 3-3-4-3, so they can get all four suits in play. I understand a 1S overcall with 5-4 majors, but don't think it is optimal with weak spades and 5-4-4. WellSpyder
Double first.Pass now.[...] they have made the last guess, partner has not shown any cards by doubling over there, and I don't know whether we can beat six You can't, unless you lead ♥A and another to hold it to 5.or go down 500 or more.More - only 7 tricks available in either major against best defence, opposite ♠972♥KJ1076♦102♣853. IRL I doubled on both rounds and conceded -650 - fortunately they didn't use the blue card, but it was still 6 imps away. I convinced myself afterwards that passing on the second round had to be right, and some clearly agree. But somehow this seems much easier to do on paper than at the table, and I'm interested to see that others may well also have adopted the same approach that I did.
