what is best

OK, so I hold a 7 count with some spades and am responding to pard's takeout double of 1. Right?

Depending on the rest of my hand, this may qualify for (at a minimum), at least FOUR different bids:

1. 1 (0-7): Axxx, xxxx, Kxx, xx.

2. 2 (8-11 or so), here I'll upgrade a super 7: AKxxx, xx, 109xx, xx

3. 3 (weak, usually 6 cards). I'll downgrade a horrible 7 here: Qxxxxx, Kx, Jxx, Jx.

4. 4 (Basically bid what I think I can make): Axxxxx, xxxx, Kx, x.

Pclayton's anwer is what your looking for, ill just add that with hands too good for 2sp, you can bid 2h.

And, to expand on this, I suggest you play 2 as forcing till suit agreement (or game) ....

1[he] [space] Dbl [space]NB [space] 2[he]
NB [space] 2[sp] [space] NB [space] 3[sp]

So 2 is forcing and 3 is invitational.

holding #4, I wouldn't bid 4S. pd could have a "dbl and bid" hand. I would bid 4S only when I have a solid (usually one loser only) 7+ cards, not interested in other suit.

As cardsharp pointed out, there is another bid (2), forcing to game. But it does not apply here since you have only 7-9 hcp.
