What is your plan?

Recommended Posts

You holds: Qx AQxx A109x xxx red vs white at IMP.

Your RHO open 1. What will you bid now, Pass or 1?

Suppose you pass. Partner bid 1 at balancing position. RHO passes. What will you bid now?

I will pass red/white and bid 2 now to show more or less exactly this hand type: Some stuff without a long suit, without support and without a stopper- of course forcing but not gf.

Gonzalo,

do you really need another way to raise partner after you passed first? I mean, you and him, you are both quite limited- well at least your hands are. :)

There are situations, where I like to bid 1 NT with or without a stopper, but here I do not see the need to do so...

Not so limited Roland. If you play the traditional way then you can easily have a balanced 14 or so here. I suspect I would pass and then bid 2 but I understand this is going to be unpopular. Obviously if you play 2 as general values then it is great here.

I'm glad that I am not the only idiot ( :) ) that would pass the first time and then bid 1NT the second time. If partner has four hearts to go with his five spades I imagine I will hear about it, and if he does not have four hearts then 1NT may be fine. If the auction does not end with 1NT then partner knows I have some values and will expect a modest spade fit such as I have.

Are oppo playing a 2+ club? In that case LHO is marked with club length, for the pass.

I'm passing first time 'round, but I'm keen to show some sort of values. I like 2 next: 1N risks getting us to 3NT facing AKxxx/Kxx/KQxx/x, on which no game is laydown but 4 is much better than 3NT.

What do you think 2H shows over partner's 1S bid?

Long hearts, too short or slightly too weak for a weak jump overcall.

On this hand I am in a minority of one as I double for the first call. This means I would have opened a potentially short club. If partner bids 1 twalsh style I rebid 1 and let him decide whether to pass with 5 or bid 1NT with 4.

If I had passed initially, while I have sympathy with the 1NT voters, I would pass. 1 could be the best contract. If LHO is going to bid 2, neither pass nor 1NT will stop him.

I think this is a great idea when we are white) but when we are red

there are far too many hands with diamonds that just cant bid over

1c due to danger.

It seems very wrong to fail to show our overall power with a mere 1n

espcially when we would bid 2n if we had an actual club stopper.

There is little reaon to be so pessimistic here. P balanced with 1s does

not promise a wea hand merely one that did not feel x was right.

A simple 2c showing limit plus (Qx surely as good as xxx) is a much

more accurate descrition of this hand. Even if your 2c meant just overall

values vs support you should use it here rather than some number of NT.
