Myhands and Netscape 4.7, help please

I have a friend who has created a problem running movies from Myhands. What seems to have happened is that, one time, she clicked on "save this file" and didn't have "always ask about this file type" checked, and now Netscape wants to save it every time without asking first, and will not run bridge movies from the webpage. She is using Netscape 4.7 on a Windows 98 system. I recreated the problem on a computer of mine but have been unable to resolve it, and am wondering if anybody knows a fix for this. I have tried going into the helper application preferences and editing the way bridge movies are viewed but that doesn't seem to work. My friend is very computer illiterate, and I will have to step her through any solution one click at a time. If there are any Netscape experts out there who can help me please let me know.

Thanks, Julie :)

Hi Julie,

This problem has shown up before I believe. I used the search feature to find a post containing the word "netscape" posted by uday. There he said the helper application for the bridge movies was

MIME type:BBOLIN

Look under help in netscape. It will tell you how to change your preferences for helper applications. I think it a feature under the edit field, but MS has won me over... I no longer even have netscape on my computer, so good luck.

No Inquiry, it is not a matter of having the wrong helper application chosen, it is a matter of Netscape ONLY saving the file, not opening it, and I need to know how to revert Netscape to its defaults for that type of file so it will give my friend the option of open or save again. I asked Uday about this problem and he didn't have a quick answer. Have done several searches on the net to try to find out how to revert that type of thing in Netscape once it thinks you have set a permanant preference and haven't found anything about it. So I am putting it up to the people here to see if someone knows how to tell Netscape to open a BBO file rather than save it after it thinks you ALWAYS want to save it.

Thanks, Julie :)

LOL - CS, I am a computer support professional and I also use internet explorer, not netscape. It is my bridge partner who uses netscape, is accustomed to it and is a little old lady living on the other side of the country from me, so I cannot get her set up with Explorer. She has made a mess, I know what she did to make it and have duplicated the mess, but I cannot find the answer to how to fix it, either from Uday or by searching the net, so I posted it here since so many people seem to work with bridge files (lin files) here and I thought someone might have an answer for me. Thanks for your concern, however.

Ok... i pulled out an old computer that isn't on the internet but still has netscape 4.7 on it.

Here is how you fix the problem.

Click on "EDIT", then preferences. Under navigator, pick "applications" Under applications look for bridge movie or something like that with LIN or LINX or PBN. When you find that application, click the "edit" button.

What I did here, is I picked as the application NetBridgeVu.exe (browse for it), and for the MIME type on the top, I put in BBOLIN. There is a little button that says "handled by" one is save, one is application. Make sure the one by application is checked. There is also a little check box about "ask me before opening downloading" make sure that one is checked if you want the save/open option. Not checking it will now cause it to always open the file.

Thanks Inquiry, I had already tried that but I tried it again and it still wants to save the file, even tho I completely removed the bridge movie application helper and put a new one in, and restarted the system. I am beginning to fear that unchecking that box one time made a registry change to the system and the registry is the only place it can be fixed. (And I for sure am not gonna try making registry changes on a little old ladies' computer long distance via messenger, lol.) Will try moving on to a Netscape forum somewhere and see if anybody there can help. Thanks for all your suggestions.

That funny, because I replicated the problem you described, and then fixed it just as I described before I posted the solution. That is, I can make it always download without asking, always open the application and run it without asking, or force it to ask if I want to open or save each time. I can switch back and forth between these three options as I described. Reallly weird, but then, that is computers.
