In competition, splinters are better used to show shortness in opps suit, not in a side suit, so I might venture a splinter if I had spades shortness here, not diamonds singleton.

Whether or not pard plays support double, double stands out as the easier bid, IMO.

Double is out of the question for me (those playing support doubles, this works, but this is a very heavy support double and you have to admit you are not passing 2 by partner).

1NT looks nice, stregnth right, spades stoppers great, but did you notice the singleton in the unbid suit? Just curious if you did. Despite this, among the choices I like 1NT best.

2? Cough.. really, that is a huge underbid.

2NT - nope.

2 - about right on stregnth, and you can make a move back towards hearts next, not exactly sure how you will choose between 3NT/4/3 however.

So the only people with a clear cut bid here are those who play support doubles. They can double then show extra values, perhaps by bidding 2NT over 2. One bid not mentioned is pass. It is hard to pass with support and good hand, but here that option is alive due to your long spades, parnter is very likely to reopen as he rates to be short in spades.

Anyway, tough hand for non-support doublers. I would go with 1Nt.

Ben, I think 1N is a huge underbid,it only shows good 13-14HCP.

Responder might have bid 1H with 5 points. Bidding a 1NT now should promise a bit more than a min:

1C pass 1H 1S

pass = bal or unbal 11-13 points

1C pass 1H 1S

1NT = bal 14, or unbal 14-16 without a better bid

It is a better usage of steps to split points this way.

good 17 is quite different from 13,14. I would much prefer 2N rather than 1N. This just distort my hand too much.

I would double, first i think most play support even if didnt talk about it, second i dont think its such a bad bid even when playing t.o (and its is ok also if playing penalty)

About the Nt ranges mentioned

Although it might be tempting to bid 1nt with 12 hcp and AJx in spade, i think this bid should show more and this hand could be its upper range(although maybe its just too good)

I dont really understand why the double is so out of the questions for those who doesnt play support double, i will bid 2h/3h over 2d/3d and dont think the damage is so big.

Here I will assume we are NOT playing support double, otherwise it seems pretty straightforward to double.

It should be defined whether opener's double is primarily a takeout or primarily a mild penalty suggestion.

I believe Opener's double shows extras with no clear rebid, with tolerance for pard's eventual penalty pass.

If we assume that 1NT rebid shows just a fair hand, either balanced or with shortness in pard's suit (say a decent 14 to a crappy 16) with serious stopper, then 1NT here is a clear underbid.
