This is from anonymous app play, so no hand record unfortunately.

I've highlighted the two odd bids. First of all, it seems there is no difference in the description between 2 and 3 by opener - same strength, some suit quality, same length. I think jumping here should set trump and request cue-bids. Moreover, if I bid 3 here, GIB bids 3 which shows a four-card suit, hiding its heart support.

So you bid 2 and GIB supports and shows some interest. Then, after RKC confirming all keys, it asks for Q (committing to 6-level) and then when receiving the answer opener has the Q and a fitting K, signs off. What would it take to get it to bid 7? Why ask for Q if you're never going past 6 and you can't stop at 5?

Best for the strong hand to ask the questions not the weak hand.

You ask for the queen because your partner is unlimited and might be able to bid 7 by himself if he knows you have all the keycards. This is bridge 101. You also should never ask for keycards and when you have them all just bid 6 opposite an unlimited partner, you should always bid 5N to tell him you have them all in case he can bid 7 even if you have no intention of doing so.

Look at it this way, 5S does not "ask for the queen" it says "we have all the keycards but I don't have the queen of trumps."

Similarly, 5N king ask does not "ask for kings" it says "we have all the keycards and the queen of trumps."

This is an important distinction opposite an unlimited hand.

Also, even if you could jump to 3H to begin with you should not, you are not ready to set trumps with AKQxxx. Partner might have 7 diamondsand a heart void or something, you could still belong in any suit but especially diamonds.

so on this hand say you bid 5NT showing all keycards

how to do you invite 7 if partner has the K

partner will bid 6 showing no King below level of

would bidding 6NT or 6 be the ask?

This problem is why you should play 5S asking for kings, the extra step allows, for example, 5N with the SK.
