Snowpacalypse in New England!!!!

Yesterday I saw a forecast map with projected snowfalls ranging from 19 to 44 inches across New England. I often observe that weather forecasters tend to be exaggerators, and so I don't believe it will be this much, on average. I am curious to see how it turns out.

In any case, have fun, stay safe.

My girlfriend is upset because we might have 2-4 inches of snow late tonight and into Saturday morning, when she goes in for her 4am-noon shift at Golden Nugget Casino in Atlantic City.

Meanwhile, the current forcast for Boston is for approximately 30 inches of snow by Saturday night.

I am willing to take the 2-4 inches that we are likely to get.

Here in Rochester, the prediction yesterday was for 8-12 inches today, starting about 9 AM, and another 2-4 tomorrow. Right now, it's raining. It's been raining since I got up at 9, not heavily.

When I got home last night I found a note on my door from my apartment manager, saying that the water would be off from 9 AM so the Water Authority could work on the main, and would likely be off all day. I thought that was a bit stupid of them, given the weather forecast. Perhaps the Water Authority knew something the weather guessers didn't. Oh, and yes, the water was off when I got up, and is still off. B-)

I think that after Sandy, officials have decided not to take any chances, and they're erring on the side of excess caution. The risks of being wrong in this direction are far less than the alternative.

Perhaps, but consistently applying this philosophy is what leads people to ignore the warnings.

Have fun, the snow we have here doesn't even cover a mouse :)

Most importantly, remember where you parked!

As a friend of mine once said on returning to the game site after the dinner break, "Make sure you get a parking spot close to your car!"

Similarly with regards to naming the storm:

In unilaterally deciding to name winter storms, The Weather Channel has confused media spin with science and public safety. We have explored this issue for 20 years and have found that this is not good science and will mislead the public. Winter storms are very different from hurricanes.

Anyway, too bad the football season is already over.

But think what this would be like if the Super Bowl were to be held in North Jersey this weekend.

Of course, no one would be stupid enough to hold the Super Bowl outdoors in a Cold Weather arena.

Is this global warming?

In a way, yes. Non-linear effects are tricky in this way. Warmer air can hold more moisture than cold air, so I guess it might be correlated with the fact that now more moist air can get into the area where temperatures are below freezing.

So I guess more of this is bound to come. Extreme weather is on the march in any time of year.

Anyway, a snowstorm isn't very dangerous if you know what you shouldn't be doing. The main problem comes if all the snow melts in a too short time span.

For some reason I'm reminded of Ron White.

Nervous fellow passenger: How far can this plane fly on one engine?

Ron White: All the way to the sight of the crash.

the sight of the crash? The English language is a wonderful thing. :) That sentence is so much richer in prompting mental images and story lines about sentient airplanes...

It's good to hear that the storm hasn't lived up to the hype. 18 inches is still enough to give people a good workout clearing it though.

Driving ban? Sounds like "We believe it's incredibly stupid to drive in this weather. We also believe that citizens cannot be trusted not to be stupid. Therefore, we are prohibiting driving until further notice"? Or did they just, as has been the usual case in the past, suggest that people stay home?

From the article Barry cited:

In the few cases where drivers violated the ban, area police officers issued verbal warnings instead of citations or arresting the violators.

Sensible.

Exceptions for the ban covered public utility and health care workers, delivery truck drivers and members of the news media.

Why except the news media, other than fear of pissing them off?

A similar ban went into effect after the infamous Blizzard of 1978. Despite the ban being lifted at 4 p.m. today, state officials urged residents to stay off the roads to allow plows, utility crews and public safety officials to clear streets and restore power.

"This does not mean we're encouraging people to travel," said Massachusetts Transportation Secretary Richard Davey. "We're asking folks to use common sense if it's necessary to travel."

And clearly saying that the ban was put into effect because they didn't trust people to use common sense.

Before somebody points out that some people clearly didn't use common sense (or the police wouldn't have given them warnings), there's always some small percentage of obliviots around. Bans won't affect them at all.

The primary reason for the ban has nothing to do with driving safety, rather its an attempt to strictly limit the number of cars on the road so the plows can move.

Three or so years ago, there was an ugly storm in the Boston area that hit mid afternoon.

The roads were clogged with commuters who blocked the plows.

The entire system was gridlocked and folks were stranded on major highways for 12+ hours.

There are only a few news media, so they won't jam the roads.
