The ordering of the list is definitely questionable and Alien Nation and Invasion are questionable entries (especially Alien Nation). I think this list is better (Babylon5, XFiles, Farscape are worthy additions). And it depends on do you count fantasy as part of science fiction? (Game of Thrones? Buffy? Dresden Files? etc.). I have many others that I'd consider at least worthy of considering (and certainly more worthy than Alien Nation) including Dark Angel, Andromeda, Quantum Leap, Sliders, V, Doll House, etc. And then comedies like Futurama, 3rd Rock from the Sun are a whole other kettle of fish (and include others like ALF, Red Dwarf, Lexx, etc.).

And where is Red Dwarf?

As we've noticed every time one of these lists is posted, the guy behind this site is obviously American. Torchwood and Dr Who have been shown prominently in the US, Red Dwarf not so much -- I'll bet he's never seen it.

At least he didn't list Lost in Space.

Maybe this particular list doesn't have Red Dwarf because the author hasn't seen it.

But really, it would never belong on a sci-fi top ten list, or bottom ten list, or any list, because it isn't sci-fi. It's comedy. Maybe it could be on a comedy top ten list. Or maybe, if you really like it, on an all-genre list. Just not sci-fi.

Why can't sci-fi be comedy ?

Why can't sci-fi be comedy ?

I personally perceive a connotation to the term "science fiction" that excludes material that is fundamentally comedy. If the primary purpose is to make the audience laugh, it is comedy. Just adding aliens or spaceships doesn't make it sci-fi, IMO. Of course there can be some amount of humor in true sci-fi (Star Trek, Firefly) but nobody would call those comedies.

I think sci-fi can be comedy or horror as well.

If fantasy is allowed, I'd add Game of Thrones into the mix...

I like your list, but I think Buffy is fantasy. Agree about Game of Thrones. How about Firefly? I think I'd move Babylon 5 up a bit.

fair enough. I can see bumping Buffy as fantasy.

I loved Firefly, but it was only on for half a season...

It's certainly possible for genres to overlap. There are comedy westerns (Blazing Saddles), comedy police procedurals (Barney Miller, Police Squad), comedy fantasies (I Dream of Jeannie, Bewitched). The Neighbors, Mork and Mindy, and My Favorite Martian are more examples of comedy sci-fi.

Don't forget, this is the site that listed Firefly on its top 10 list for both sci-fi and westerns.

I loved Red Dwarf as well. And Dr Who. Also the Avengers with Patrick MacNee and Diana Rigg in particular. It got more and more sci-fi-ish as the years passed. All of them had elements of humor which were part of their appeal. Why should it have to be grim to be called sci-fi?

Yeah, I'd bump Buffy as fantasy (unless you allow fantasy as part of sci-fi - which I consider a perfectly respectable and reasonable thing to do). I do think ST:DS9 is worthy of being on the list. But your list is much better than OP's list IMO.

I have no problem with including fantasy in SF. After all, when I was growing up, my two favorite magazines were Analog and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. But if we expand it, then "top ten" isn't a big enough list - we'd have to go to top fifteen at least. B-)

Firefly was 14 episodes, including the pilot.

.. and certainly it is eligible. If Fawlty Towers (12 episodes) is eligible as great comedy, Firefly surely is as sci-fi.

Third Rock from the Sun was entertaining, but I can hardly imagine anything further from science fiction. Absurd to even mention it as such, IMO.

Personally I separate fantasy as well, there is plenty of each to justify two categories. Many people lump them together though.

I also think DS9 was the best Star Trek, especially the last 4 seasons or so.
