whereagles
Imps, none vuln, expert partner and not-so-hot opponents. You hold ♠ --♥ QJxxx♦ JT987x♣ 9x You LHO pard RHOpass..1♠...2♣..pass?? At this vulnerability, a 2♦/2♥ opening would have been weak with 5-6 cards and 1NT 9-11. Options are:Pass2♦/2♥, natural constructive3♣, mild support (with more you could cue)3♦/3♥, fit-bids So, what do you do?
Free
I'd change my bidding agreements. How can you have a passed hand with constructive values in ♥ or ♦? Pfff, I think I'll pass...
joker_gib
Well, I have nothing and I cannot bid anything than pass
pclayton
I'm guessing pard has 4 heart or 4 diamonds and we have a play for 6; xxxx, void, AKxx, AKxxx perhaps. I still have to pass. Where are the ♠'s?

HeartA
Pass. What else do you want to bid?
whereagles
At table I bid 3♣ for tactical reasons. These particular opponents were not very familiar with the law of total tricks, so shutting out the 2-level could very well lead to them not insisting in spades. Also, since pard rates to have 3-4 spades, he could easily diagnose my spade shortage and realize the 3♣ bid might have been made solely on obstructive purposes. Or so I though, because this is what happened Me LHO pard RHOpass..1♠...2♣..pass3♣...pass..3NT..pass Oops. He took me seriously. What on Earth is he thinking of? I couldn't open a thing at this vulnerability! What's more is he really didn't have anything that resembles a 3NT bid:[hv=d=n&v=n&w=shqjxxxdjt987xc9x&e=skqjxxhakdqcktxxx]266|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]No double, no trouble. This drifed 3 down. luke warm
hmm... from his point of view it looks like 9 lucky tricks are there, given your club raise... i'd probably pass 3c, but i don't think 3nt is that farfetched... he has what appears to be a nice couple sources of tricks
