West very likely has a lot of good cards, at least a 9+ spade fit, very likely a 10, 11 or even a 12 card fit. I can't see E-W stopping below 4S, and I need to stop all communication immediately. 5♦ is odds on to make. Even if my partner has a terrible hand like ♠K♥AJ98♦KQ32♣6543 Only down one, since we know where all the good cards are. If opponents bid on, I double for penalties. 4S is good, but it allows the opponents to clarify their hands, allowing them to know if they should double 5 Diamonds. Similiar problem with 4NT. gszes Posted February 7, 2013 Report Share Posted February 7, 2013 majors nt minors there is no reason we cannot search for 3n via 3s even with no partnershipagreements whatsoever. if p has "stuff" in spades and a min 5d may notbe very good either so we search for our most likely plus. If p cannot stopspades we are in great position to consider slam exploration and we havesaved some bidding space. the problem with 4s (sorry mikeh) is that 3n mightbe our last makeable spot and we are bypassing it on sheer optimism p cannot stop spades. a direct 5d has a problem also in that slam wil be impossible to bid if p has 2/3small spades and anything above a min extra for ex xxx AQx Kxxx KJxand all it takes is xxx Ax Kxxx AKxx to make a grand.
