Why do you add these nonsense marks? I don't know why you think so highly of 2, but 2 is even worse than 2NT because you don't have ruffing value, while your opps may (and in fact, in the given hand West can ruff a )...

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.
I make it clear that my marks are merely my subjective opinion, FWIW. Apparently not much :( Free's assessment may well be more realistic :) Anyway, IMO, we would benefit from assessments of contracts reached - preferably as a result of simulation.

IMprecision:

1 - 1 (strong; 0-4 or bal GF or 7+RP)

1 - 1 (4+ or 21+ bal; 0-4, not very shapely)

1NT - ? (21-23, bal)

I would pass with the 4333 two jacks, but it is a judgment call. If responder invites, we will stop in 2NT. Also, note that if opener's majors were reversed, we will also end in 2NT, since opener would bid 1 over 1 and we cannot stop in 1NT then.

Does this problem finally come down to:

- whether a 2NT opening is a strong balanced or not

- if yes, then what the range of 2NT is

- if 1 is negative, whether a 1 rebid is natural or 2-way or simply second round forcing

- if 1 is double negative, what the range of 2NT rebid is

And do people use their own invented system here?

"Uncontested auction", but East opens 1NT:10-12 nv.

Some Easts maybe, but not many (at least in my area). And if they do, that's fine. I don't mind defending 1Nx, and if they play some kind of forced runout system (ie, they play 1Nxx or run to 2x) I will have a lot of fun doubling whatever contract they end up in (2x looks likely). Either way, it is better than 2N-1.

*** This started out "comparing systems".

So what are your constraints for double intending 1NT-X?

Surely denying 5-5 Majors?

Bal or may have single/void?

Do you think you outscore VUL game when that's on?

Or does double suggest not VUL game?

So what does that intended penalty double now look like?

What hands does partner let penalty play?

For us, a double of NT is always penalty oriented.

Constraints for doubling 1N: 17+ points. Should also have a good lead if minimum.

Denying 5-5 majors?: Yes (in fact it even denies 5 spades with 4 hearts, or a 5 card major with a 5 card minor). It also denies a 6 card major.

Could have a singleton or void, if for instance it has a long and strong minor suit.

If partner has enough that a game is on, they will be in trouble in 1N. We have the lead, so we should get into our suits first. Not that it will always score better (hence why we prefer overcalling with very shapely major oriented hands).

Partner should let the penalty double play unless they have 9+ points (8 if they have a good 5+ major).

Are we alone in playing a double of 1N for penalty? I thought it was prety standard.
