SCREAM bids this...

1C-1S 16+, 0-2 QPs

1N-2C bal or semi-unbal, Stayman

2H

We use the same NT structure for double negatives and semipositives as we do for passed hand situations. I'd recommend this to others.

Fairly boring deal but nice to finally have two double negative hands. I think I'll post the next deal already.

Quick question about West's pass over the strong 1. Might some people, with 12 high card points and a good 5 card suit, overcall 2 with the west hand? A lot of people like to compete prety agressively over a strong club, even at unfavorable.

*** Don't like this suit for 2C. BUT opponents WILL get to 2S or 3C, NOW WHAT???

*** Should we go 3H? North sees shape without defense, yes, this hand.

*** Part of system comparing is "how well placed are we in competition?"

*** What defense/offense inferences are known to your systems? Esp. on this auction?

Yuck! Vulnerable, I am all over 13-15 1N on this junk. NV, I have 1m as choices!

1 - p

probably not playing it here... but it has happened.

Uncontested auction...

OK waiting. :)

If you have to play in a Burn's Law violation, this is the best level for it.

2S for tosr

1-1 : any 16+; 0-7 or occ 8+ with <2 ctls

1nt-2 : 16-18 bal; transfer

2 : accept

S is close to a super accept. If one of the Q were an K then 2nt to show heart fit, 2 of the top 3 honors, and 2.5 QT outside would be available. But with both black quacks a simple 2 is the system and table bid.

1C-1D (16+ ; 0-7 any or GF 4441)

1NT-2D (17-18 bal ; transfer)

2H-pass (not worth a super accept imo ; ok)

With 5S-4H we start wit stayman because opener is supposed to correct to 2S with a 3 card. With 5H-4S we just transfer and hope we don't miss our S fit.

1 = 15+ nat/bal or 18+ any

... - 1 = most non-GF

1NT = 15-17 bal or 4414

... - 2 = 5+ hearts (pass seems like it should be an alternative)

2NT = 4+ hearts, not 3433 or 4414, max

... - 3 = puppet to 3

3

Do we really believe the opps will not compete if we stop in 2 here? It is one thing coming into a live auction but once the opps stop you know partner has some values.

Based on a recent post from Andy (gnasher) it seems that Brits super-accept far more often than Americans. Perhaps this is an example of that.

Hm. I hadn't considered that possibility because I'm focused on strong club. Akhare said he wouldn't overcall with East's hand against a strong club but this is a balancing situation. My vote is to pass because the opponents obviously have a heart fit and I suspect South has an 18-19 balanced hand. Even if we have a spade fit I think we're outgunned. How do others feel about 1D passed out? Would others balance 1S?

I think the opponents pass throughout. I posted East's hand in the comparing systems thread and Akhare wouldn't overcall 1S (confirmed my thought but is their best opportunity imo to enter the auction) and I don't see either opponent wanting to compete at the 2 or 3-level. If others feel differently they can opine.

Pass 2000

Again, our auction will not be uncontested (unless they play some kind of defense to our forcing pass, which I guess they do not). Assuming they play some sort of natural system:

P* - (1C) - P - (1S); South's pass is 0-7 or 17+, north's pass assumes the weak hand, and we play our normal defense methods here (fairly standard) but may make tactical bids since partner is usually 0-7 hcp.

Dbl - (P) - 2H - all pass?

How about if West opens a weak 1NT, Kungsgeten?

Weak NT is very uncommon at the club we tend to play this system. We haven't discussed balancing by a pass opener after they open 1NT, but if we play our general agreements (the weak hand can not act, the strong hand must act) and our normal weak NT defense (basic Landy) it would go something like this:

P - (1NT*) - P - (2H**); (1NT 12-14, assuming they play transfers.)

Dbl - (P*) - P - (2S); Dbl shows hearts, I guess we really should have five, but what to do? I guess their pass would show only two spades?

P - (P) - 3H - all pass

If they play 2M as natural, it becomes even more awkward:

P - (1NT) - P - 2S;

Dbl - (P) - 3H - all pass (perhaps it would make sense to play Lebensohl here, but we do not have any agreements on that)

I think the more common defence to a double of a transfer is for bidding to show 2 and passing to show 3. After a pass, many play XX as a re-transfer and bidding the major as an invite.

Your defence is also interesting. Most pairs either play X = hearts and 2 = takeout or X = takeout and 2 = Michaels. I would have thought South should be able to make some sort of takeout bid over 2.

In any case, it looks like all paths lead to 3(N) here.

North T972 87643 T5 K4: __ 1 2

South Q8 AQT2 AK73 Q65: 1 1N 3

  • 1 = Art, 16+.
  • 1 = Art, neg, 0-7,
  • 1N = Nat, flat, 16-18
  • 2 = Transfer.
  • 3 = Nat, 4.

Marks, IMO: 2 = 10. 3 = 8. 4 = 6. 1N = 5.
