Block messages

I keep getting messages I don't want from tourneys I even never played, and never will play. Is there any way to block these spam-like messages? I already asked the sender several times to stop it, but clearly he doesn't listen... I also put him as enemy and use the "ignore enemy" option, but every time I start up BBO I get these annoying things! Grrr

Sounds like a club message to me... seems like if you mark sender as enemy that should block it (as yellow, I don't select ignore messages from enemies). The solution obvioulsy is to be removed from the list of club members... but if you ask and the host doesn't remove you, that is a problem. I have to agree, I get a lot of club messages, I would just as soon not get becuase there is WAY TO MANY of them. Recently a club suspended my membership because I haven't played in so many months.... ok, np, this was surely true, as I find less and less time to play in tournments lately. But despite being banned from their club specific tourneys, I get dozens of messages a week about their events... Imagine that.. i can't play and I am still subjected to what you call "spam" like messages.

I guess something might need to be done about this. Ask a yellow to have a talk with the club manager to have your name removed.

These messages seem to be a problem at times.

Some of the problems with them are:

Logging in and receiving numerous messages for expired events. Perhaps there should be a way for the messages to be automatically deleted or not sent after some specified time. e.g. 30 minutes for notices that announce a tourney in 30 minutes.

Some of the club messages get very long. I find this particularly annoying when I am having a discussion or teaching and a multi-line message comes in that fills the entire chat window. In one case the message that filled the window contained alternate blank lines :( That club has taken me off their membership list so

that I do not receive the messages but said that I can be added to play their tourneys when I want.

It would also be good if these club messages were associated with a different sound than normal private chat. Maybe this can be done I haven't actually investigated.

There is another thread 'chat to all friends'. Could the below club message serve the purpose.

Seems like there is same potentail abuse problems though.

Is it only the club owner who can send club messages?

In the modify user profile, there is a check box 'remember filter settings'. Where is the filter? Does it mean the 'from lobby', 'from enemy', 'ignore all chat' only?

No, the filter is not related to the chat settings. It refers to the

"View" settings (filter by skill level, language, view full/empty tables, etc.)

I always feel guilty when I send out Club Broadcasts because I know they are going to be an annoyance to the Honorary members.

The dilemma - make them short and numerous or combine them and then annoy because they are long ?

We just have to bide our time patiently until Uday can make it possible for Club Managers to filter out members from the broadcast list. At present if you are a member of a Club for whatever reason, you will receive each and every broadcast regardless of whether it deals with a matter that concerns you.

When broadcasting by Chat (as distinct from LMM which is received when a member logs in) I do endeavour to send them as a run-on message with no line spaces - unless I hit the wrong button by mistake

At the moment there are only two options for the log in ones - have the mouse poised and hit the ok , ok , ok without pausing to read (you can always go back and check your chat log if you think you might have missed one you needed to read :P ) or have your membership of the Club in question deleted. For the online ones well deletion of the membership is the only option :(

Now Scoob that is an idea I like :-))

For the LMMs (the ones you get when you log in ) that would be perfect . Use the same system as on here , maybe. When I log in if there is no message I know not to waste time checking the Inbox , if there is a notice I can choose to read the mail straight away or leave it for later.

Wouldn't solve the online ones though one still needs either the members to have an option to block Club Chat and/or the Club Managers to have a means of filtering off members from receiving them

Here's hoping it may make it onto the 2005 To Do List :-))

Happy New Year Everyone and heartfelt THANKS to Fred, Sheri and Uday for all those things that were on the 2004 To Do List and are now so much a part of our daily lives.
