Welcome to the Bridge Base Forums, three post in your first day!!! way to go.

 

I have a very simple rule, until we find a fit, all doubles are for takeout (if not conventional). So here, over 2H with EAST hand, I have a clear takeout double.

 

When we open one suit, partner bids, and they overcall.. the double places emphasis on the first suit (with two good suits, just bid the second one). So this hand is perfect... so the intial bidding will be...

 

1D-(P)-1S-(2H)

This tells partner that you have clubs, you are not terrible unhappy with your opening bid (or you could have passed) and you diamonds are much better than your clubs. Now then, if you play support double, this double is not available, but that is your problem, not mine... :-)

 

Over the jump to 4H, West has a tremendous club fit, and has visions of six or seven clubs opposite the right hand... but he also knows that EW have lots and lots of hearts (partner has two at most for the double, and one is likely). I think you are pretty much out of room to investigate much.... I would try 4NT but your partner may have to deal with a 6H bid before he replies (at this vulnerability) so a direct leap to 6♣ also has a lot of merit, where your partner might get to use a forcing pass if they bid 6♥ over that...

I do play support doubles here, which is unfortunate in this case.

 

I would like to bid diamonds, but I can't do this very well (too good for 3D, 4D bypassed 3NT), so I might be forced to bid 3C here? That would be ugly, this is a tough decision. Perhaps when playing good/bad 2NT you could bid 3D here?

 

Partner's bid after 3C would be much easier than after a diamond bid.

East-West did play support double. east had to choose between 3D & 3C.

 

i would choose 3c here, as 3c showing 2 suiters, and is likely keeping the bidding going/open. disadvantage of 3D is that partner can easily pass it with no fit while 5/6 level contract is there.

 

to hannie, playing IMPS, i don't really worry about bypassing 3NT with 1174 hands,

This is why I don't like support double (and redbl)... If I have some crappy hand and three or four card support, I bid two of my partners major. It really isn't a complicated auction. But there is no good way to bid hands like this if you play support doubles (and it often gets even worse if your minors were reversed, or if you had four in the unbid major).

 

For the life of me, the LAW and being able to compete to the three level or not just isn't worth the hassle of screwing up these hands to figure out if you have a seven, eight, or nine card fit (your partner will never be confused by three cards.. .when you raise you will be 3 or 4, he will have 4 or 5.. so he knows the legnth is 7/8 or 8/9 by counting his length,,, it is just you who are in the dark, but your bid of 2 makes him captain anyway, so that is ok).

Ben is totally right on this. Why distort your bidding to clarify the trump position for partner AND THE OPPONENTS. So our LAW decisons will be less accurate after the single raise--so will theirs. Double should be be for good cards but stuck for a bid: takeout.

With AKJT 7th and Kxxx 4th suggesting you have that suit is completelly wrong, the only way playing on such suit to be good is partner having at least 5 cards, 7-4 nearly always play better on the 7 card suit.

Why not simply open or rebid 5♦?

This hand certainly looks more like a 5♦ rebid (which allows West to bid 6♦) than a 5♦ opening, but shutting off the opponents may win big another day, so I am not sure I wouldn't go for it.

as you plann to rebid 4d anyway (anthonie rebid 5d), would it be better to introduce 3c and rebid diamond later ? well, parnter may pass your 3C,

which indicates strong club preference, such as 3 club, 1D. or 4 club.

other than that, partner always had weak preference 3d bid, and bidding is still alive.
