1H-2C

2H-3H <<--- slamish

4H-4N <<--- blackwood

5C-5D <<--- trump queen

6H <<--- trump queen, no club, spade or diamond king, no two kings

....,6N

Pass

Grand slam in NT is almost exactly 50%. If the club hook wins, you are in. There are some chance EAST will have five clubs to the Queen, and to pick up four to the queen you ahve to risk losing a club to stiff Queen (as you need to hook twice). Since you will hook on first round, to protect against four to the Queen with EAST, you still have excellent squeeze chances if there are five over there...so let's call it 50%... Bid it, don't bid it, entirely up to you.

In both 7H and 7NT, you can try for stiff spade KING first if you like before the club hook. (4S, 2C, 2D, 5H)

I would pass with north's hand, likley bidding now...

P-2N

3D-3H

3S-4N <== two suit RKCB, balanced opposite two suiter

5C-5D <== queens?

6C <<=== both queens....

Opener knows responders hand is AQxxx of hearts, Qxxx(x) of spades. Not a king or would have opened. Place contract with same guidance as before.

It seems debatable as to whether North should open 1st seat in normal methods (unless there is a specific agreement to open any semibalanced 10 count with a good 5 card major).

Lol... ya think... I open light as heck, and I wouldn't open that hand.. .change it to...

[hv=s=sqjxxhaqjxxdxxxcx]133|100|and I would open it. Good thing about playing with world class partners like htis one.. hehehe, they give you lots of opportunities to get yourself into trouble. [/hv]

I'd be happier opening if the spades and hearts were reversed so that I could bid both of my suits.

North's opening is not really out-of-range. (7N would still be on a finesse - but 7 would become a bit less than 60% -- if North had the Q.)

Since North opens 1 because of his good suits, yet seems unable to rebid 2 over 2 to show his spades, maybe his hand should be viewed as a commercial either for switching to the Brazilian 1 relay and five-spade 1N or for playing that 2 over 2 doesn't promise any extras. (Yes, it is also a commercial for Flannery, but Flannery does cost a full opening.)

Ben, I think on your bidding you forgot to ask about Q, with Q on north´s hands you have 13 easy tricks.

1-2

2-3

4-4NT

5-5

5-6

6-..

I would actually pass 6, I may not enjoy 6NT on a lead. 6 offers the ruff a on your hand chance when aprtner really has the wrong hand, althou it offers some Jxxx losers options.

I would not open the north hand, even though I open light. Shift some things (major suits, vulnerability, minor shape, ..) and I would open.

I agree with Fluffy's auction (although I think north should rebid 5NT instead of 5H to show the queen and deny a king).

I think that South is too good for any 2NT opening (whether it is 20-21 or 20-22). Did you notice the four tens, all those controls, and the chunky club suit!

My auction would be

pass

2C-2H (natural, good 5+ suit, 8+ points)

3H-4H (no side first or second round control)

4NT-5C (1 keycard)

5D-5NT (heart queen but no king)

6C-6H (no club queen)

For me, 4 denied the fitting AK or Q.... so no need to ask. It can't be there. I do cue-bid queen in partners 2/1 suit on this auction, because it is always a real suit for me. I also use Serious 3NT, so 4 would not have shown any slam interest at all. So you can almost draw up norhts hand after 3-4...

No spade A or K (else 3), no singleton spade

No club A, K, or Q (else 4) - maybe singleotn club, do not cue-bid short in part suit

Not fair hand for bidding, else 4 - last train.

No slam interest (including good diamonds) cause no 3NT...

So the hand turns out to be pretty much what is is.. five/six hearts, goodish hearts (else no opener), no stiff diamond (with goodish hearts might make last train bid).... Think something like Qxx AQJxxx Qxxx x at best.

p 2C

2D 2N

3C 3D

3S 4C

4N 5C

5N 6C

6H p

anyone who opens 2N has been counting high cards wayyyy too much. 3S is smolen, 4C is a cue for hearts (this is a great hand for slam), then keycard and 5N. 6C=CK and over 6H pard would bid 7 with the spade king presumably.
