1M------------2M

3M------------?

now, what do you think of the meanings of 3M?

Whatever you believe works best, will do.

In general I prefer it to be some sort of invite, ... if you are N/B than the adv. is,

if you forgot your agreement, at least you know it invites.

In most case you have a min, than you decline the invite, or you have a max, than you

accept, regardless of your answer to the implict question, that got asked.

The truth is, it rarely matters you would need to play lots of hands, to see a difference,

so ... whatever you believe works best, will do.

We play it as trump quality ask, never came up.

I like the suggestion, that 3M showes a 6th card.

With kind regards

Marlowe

I'm not sure why you posted this in the "Novice and Beginner Forum". I agree with Codo - in this context it is basically any invite. If you

were actually looking for a discussion at a more advanced level, I refer you to my 2 favourite posts from 2007:

As we know , after 1M-2M, you can utilize some game tries if you intend to try game, for example:long suit game tries or short game

tries etc.In many times you have to open 5 card major with a broken suit (e.g:J7642) or even with a yarbotough (98754).When you

hold that hand above, after respond to 2S,all of side suits are not real help ones but trump itself, so I think the auctions:1M-2M-3M,

3M is just a trump help-suit game try,not for other bid,is it all right?

When the trump itself is a help suit after 1M-2M,how to describe?

Thank you very much in advance.

I discussed and tried trump help suit game trys in one partnership and we declined to play them.

Even with 23456 opposite 789 you may hold your losses to 3 tricks.

In your actual layout, give Partner KQx,xxx,xx,Axxx and no game is really good, but 4 has the best (only) chance.

We use the 1M-2M-3M with Kokish game tries as a trump asking bid. This allows Responder to pass or bid 3NT with a weak trump suit and good values in the other suits. There's a pretty good discussion of that here:

Some like to play this sequence as some kind of invitational bid in spades, but non-invitational in hearts.

Yeah I'm one of those people. I don't think 1-2-3 stop is at all useful for spades, but for hearts it can be if you're like 1-6 in the majors with a weak hand. Not that it's likely to hold that hand, but it's not that useful as a game try either.

I am a big of finding 3NT when that is right after 1M - 2M, and I think that it is good to use both 3H and 3NT for this purpose. For example you could use 3NT as a tricks type of hand, something like Kx AKxxxx Ax xxx, and 3H as a balanced 17-19 (eg Axx AQJxx AQx Jx), where you want partner to bid 3NT if it looks right to him. If you want to suggest 3NT from your side you can bid 2NT followed by 3NT (or pass 3NT if partner bids it).
