cherdano
I think it's usually much easier to see whether the ball has crossed the line of scrimmage than whether it's crossed the goal line, yet they allow reviews on touchdowns...It's not reviewable for the same reason that there is no review at all in soccerfootball. mgoetze
OK so apparently the only thing Atlanta's defense is actually good at is putting pressure on the quarterback, and Wilson just had to move around a bit more to get better results in the 2nd half. Well, I'm confident that the 49ers' O-Line is looking forward to showing the Seahawks' O-Line how to do it right. 49ers vs. Patriots in the Superbowl. jjbrr
mgoetze, i'm sure there are others in this forum that i'm missing, but i'd be in favor of watching the games each week with you and jlall, especially in the playoffs. you seem to have some insight. not that others don't. just given the threads. TimG
So this year I decided to try and understand football before the super bowl. I watched a few games, and it seems like whenever there's a 2nd & 2 (or 2nd & 1, 2nd & 3) situation, the offense goes for a rushing play with a high probability of gaining 3-5 yards. The commentators don't seem to think this is controversial, or maybe they're just too busy talking about stuff unrelated to the game. Wouldn't it make more sense to try a risky long pass play in these situations? After all, if it fails, you still have 2 more tries to make that safe short rushing play. Or am I missing something?Going for a big play on 2nd and short (and in other situations where the defense might expect run) is nothing new. y66
It appears on 2nd and 2 you just allow Kaepernick to run his option thang, and he gains about 15 yards a pop :)The option thang is called "Ride and Decide". When the QB fakes the handoff and runs off right tackle, it's called "Samurai". Good story in today's paper about Chris Ault and the Pistol Offense, so named because the quarterback takes the snap closer to the line of scrimmage and hands off closer to the line of scrimmage than in the shotgun formation. JLOGIC
LOL DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS. LOL RUNNING. Best pass game vs best defense and great run game, PASSING WINS.
mgoetze
Yeah in the first half I was like "really, another run for 1 yard?" whenever SF had the ball. They can pass too, they just need to try it more often.
JLOGIC
I don't know. Their Oline is legit elite at run blocking, and Gore is a great work horse. And of course kaep works best off of play action or the option when the run game is going because he is both a deep threat and a big run threat. Personally, I think SF offense is playing it right with all their runs. It is key to their strategy to set up these big passes, if kaep had to throw all the time it would not be nearly as effective. On the other hand, these ATL runs when they are horrible at running and michael turner is just LOLworthy, combined with the fact that they have the most elite passing game that is not built off of play action or the run game at all is pretty amazing. Although they seem to have figured that out. Edit: And of course SF run D is also legit elite. Having turner run up the middle as much as they did in the first quarter was just amazingly funny.
