how to open?

1N

its a point short but the extra club length makes up for it on top

of that it helps protect two Kx holdings if we win the bidding.

I sure dont want to open 1c and rebid 2c which can be done with

a king less than we have and we arent that close to a 3c rebid.

Aren't you masterminding the 1st round of bidding by opening 1nt? I can still protect my kings by bidding 1nt after any response from partner.

No you cannot. 1 NT will be an underbid, 2 NT an overbid.

Not an instant decision for me. Playing Twalsh a 1NT rebid after partner's red suit for us shows 17/18, so I have to complete the transfer or rebid clubs. If we end in 3NT I don't care who plays it, but if we end in 1NT I want it to be me. While I play 1NT if he bids 1, if he bids 1 then it will be him that plays 1NT.

I open 1NT. The extra club is an insurance if he goes to game, and it does not stop partner showing a 6 card major.

1N to avoid rebid problems later, AND hoping partner doesn't have the right (54)=1=3 hand that makes 6 a lock. We are not likely to find such a slam unless we have a 6 card minor reveal gadget over Stayman (or Jacoby).

Hardy said when the doubletons is with good quality,it should be regarded as balanced hand, and notrump bid is more descriptive than long suit with not good suit quality. In the bidding process you must try to show your hand pattern.

No matter what the final contract is ,the hand is more suitable for the opener to be a declarer, not for to be a dummy, develpment direction of final contract may be notrump in this hand , it is very important to let this hand be a declarer. As for opening 1 ,opener maybe have not noticed a factor of hand balance .

Why did you ask the question?

I've had more good results than bad lately when opening hands like this 1NT.

1) My hand is certainly worth and upgrade to 15 pts. It probably has the playing strength of many 16 pt hands.

2) I have Kx in each major so if I am transferred to a major and passed out, my K should bolster the 5-2 ft (if pd has only 5) and Kx in the other major may also lead to a ruff for me if opps don't attack trumps.

3) My J9x looks like a partial stop and could even be useful on offense if PD has a honor.

4) Since I think the hand is worth 1NT I am too strong to open 1 and rebid 1NT. I don't think this is good enough to rebid 3 and yet it is quite strong for rebidding 2.

5) By opening 1NT I am protecting my Kx's from the lead.

6) OK I have minor concern that I might miss 6 but I'll risk it.
