pirate22
We all know the scores for 1cl-1d-1 ht-1sp made with/without overtricks+ part score. and the scores for 5cl-5d-3n/t-4hts -4sp +game. Should 5cl and 5diamonds hold sway over 3n/t/4hts/4spades.after all, one has to make 11 tricks, and should obtain a premium, over the above game scores. rather than a lucky 3n/t made-or any 4 major on a nice major break. When was the scoring worked out, and decreed many years ago,and who by? Some what as the USA Constitution was laid down by Abraham Licoln, all militaria shoud be able to bear arms {Flintock Rifles}not AK 47's. and was changed by law 2005? to include all americans to bear arms. to give an analogy. im interested in the Bridge laws. regards
hrothgar
When was the scoring worked out, and decreed many years ago,and who by? As I understand matters, the basics of the scoring tables was defined as part of the development of auction bridge. So, the basic concepts date back far before the more modern game of "contract bridge". With this said and done, the scoring tables have been revised (relatively) recently when the penalties for doubled tricks were adjusted upwards to deal with high level sacs over small slams. aguahombre
No problem. It would only require every partnership to change its system, style, and strategies at all forms of scoring (MP, IMP, BAM etc.). The idea should be readily accepted by all. barmar
There's a brief history in Wikipedia. Apparently, the game bonuses for 3NT, 4♥, and 5♦ go way back to bridge-whist in the 1890's. The modern scoring table was devised by Harold Vanderbilt when he created contract bridge in the 1920's, and it retained the extra requirements for minors. Yes, taking 11 tricks is harder than taking 9 or 10 tricks. The scoring table is designed to create a difference between majors, minors, and NT. The game bonus is for accurately deciding which strain to choose -- you should only prefer to play in a minor when trying to make game in a major or NT would fail. This requires better bidding techniques and judgement, which makes the game more demanding and interesting.
pirate22
So when contract bridge came in-still no scoring changes-and i accept the increase in penalties.Auction bridge was 1920-30's???
pirate22
Thanks Barmar-and respect what you say regarding game in a major as opposed to 3n/t or major failure..I still rest my case for a premium on 11 tricks in a ninor
barmar
Auction bridge was 1904, contract bridge was 1925. As I understand it, the only significant scoring change since then was the increase in doubled/redoubled undertrick penalties in the 1980's. aguahombre
There was also a change in the redoubled bonus for making...a counter to the stripe-tailed ape double. It brought 5mXX+1 up slightly above 6m from slightly below it, if I remember correctly. Edited January 3, 2013 by aguahombre
blackshoe
?? 5mXX, making, is +800 NV. 6m making is 920. Or did you mean 5mXX+1? That's +1000, NV. Dunno what it used to be.
aguahombre
Fixed my post, Ed. Tks. It was when the opponents were vulnerable. There was only a 50 point premium for the make (either doubled or redoubled), giving the slam a slightly better score. Then it was changed to 100.
