Constructive or non-constructive

Is this a raise to 2H? Or do you go via 1NT forcing?

 

Does it make a difference if you play limited (up to 16) 1 heart and 1 spade openings?

This was partner's hand. He bid 4H opposite my constructive raise. It made, but only because of a (reasonable) misdefence. He did comment that he thought I was light for 2H.

Letting 4H through was quite common. I have no problems being in 4H here (we had the same auction and made the same 10 tricks). It's more interesting as a defensive problem.

If p doesn't like being in 4H at IMPS on that sequence, he could at least offer to have his shortness better placed.

You have a huge amount of wastage between these 2 hands and there was still (good) play for 4. Unless your system contains a way of locating the wastage it is not surprising to end in the game contract. Of course, locating that wastage may well also make the defence easier, so going directly to 4 has a fair bit going for it on a purely practical level.
