8-3 with three in partner's major

1. Not willing to preempt us out of slam just yet.

I don't know anyone who would think 4 was a splinter. Didn't we just have a thread featuring a number of auctions of which 1 4 was one, and everybody seemed to agree it was natural. But this hand is too good for that: because of the heart length and the club void.

mikeh, could you explain what you're hoping to accomplish with 1? I hope this isn't a hijack, but what is your next bid over 1NT/2/2? How do you plan to handle hearing a large number of / from LHO?

if partner bids 1N or 2 anything, other than 2N or 2, then I bid 4 and don't understand why that should seem difficult to understand.

But if partner, for example, rebids 2N, then I will transfer to spades and make a slam try thereafter.

If LHO bids clubs or diamonds, then I lose out IF rho can bounce to the 5-level and IF LHO was passing a direct 4, neither of which is a certainty.

I have seen 12 and even 13 card fits, by the way. Sure, many such hands for opener can move over 4, but I want to be in slam opposite Axx AKxxx AJx xx but not Axx AKxxx xx AJx, as some examples.

IMO, most hands are going to end up in 4, but by bidding 1 I increase the chances of bidding to a good slam while avoiding a bad one at a cost of somewhat increasing the chances of the opps forcing me to the 5-level (not over 5, but definitely over 5),
