TWO4BRIDGE
I've got to get this off my chest... to quit thinking about it :rightly or wrongly, Responder decides to use a modified Jac2NT: ResponderQ 9 8 x xA 10 x xK Q xx 1S - 2NT!3H* - 3S**3NT*** - 4C ( Ctrl cue )4S**** - ?? 3H* = 4 or 5 cd ♥ suit headed by at least an A or K, AND shortness elsewhere 3S** = next step asks shortness 3NT*** = ♦ shortness 4S**** = no stiff ♦A or void AND no other ♥card: A, K or Q Responder now knows of an unavoidable ♦-loser AND a possible ♥-loser ( he knows 4-4 or 5-4 w/A and K but no Q ). Should Responder risk going to the 5-level ( with RKC ) in hopes that partner has the remaining THREE key cards ( ♠A K and ♣ A ??
Finch
Whether responder moves or not, RKC is clearly wrong. If partner has the remaining 3 key cards slam can still be basically playless even opposite substantial extras (AKJxx Kxxx x AKx )I would have signed off over 3NT, but having made one slam try with 4C it has to be right to pass 4S now. AJ10xx Kxxx x KQx is a perfectly respectable opening bid, and 4 could be off, never mind five. We are making slam opposite AKxxx Kxxx J Axx and it is quite playable opposite AKxxx KJxx x Axx but I assume 4S is non-forcing... if partner has really substantial extra values, I assume he woudn't have bid 4S. On this hand wouldn't it have been better to show a singleton club?
ggwhiz
As Frances points out, there are many ways to go down vs only one to make slam that you can think of within a minute. That makes it a fast(ish) pass for me.
