Doubler has made a mistake, in partner's opinion. I pass and await partner's hitting their next call. With me having a full opener, I suspect they're in big trouble. I took 1700 out of opps before in this situation.

In some local partnerships we play this XX conventionally instead of naturally, and there it is a transfer to 2s, occasionally to play there, but usually a lead directing (asking for a spade lead if RHO declares) heart raise.

Yes - the redouble says that the doubler made a mistake, unless you play a variant of McCabe or some other conventional treatment of redouble.

On the other hand, the pass over the redouble should be for penalties, although not everyone plays it that way.

Still, pass by opener is clear.

One wonders what hand couldn't open something and would want to pass this XX for penalties.

Anyhow..XX (unless conventional) means that the doubler likely made a mistake. I'd expect a random 13 HCP minimum and it invites cooperation from the opener in penalizing the opp's runout.

Considering that this sits under the weak 2 bidding and that the XX (for me) is 13+ HCP, I think I'm afraid to pass with this for penalties. I'd prefer that pass in this rare sequence where the double of a weak 2 is XX simply asks the doubler to do his own running (obviously here not having enough in to run to).

However, this may be the minority view but I think it is different from passing XX of a normal takeout double of a normal opening at the 1 level.

If you are not going to pass, what are you going to do?

Would you pass with x QTxxxxx xxx xx? Suppose I gave you the eighth heart?

There is no need for responder to redouble just because they are in trouble. He can pass then double for penalties later. You'll sometimes get only 570 instead of 840, but the downside of tipping them off and giving them extra options is more frequent and may be more costly. There are two possible meanings for redouble:

1. Asking partner to cooperate in penalizing. I think this is the normal meaning. Here I would double if they bid clubs and pass otherwise.

2. Rescue, probably a two suiter. This is definitely not standard and less useful after a second seat preempt.
