The Board will work on ensuring progress towards accomplishing the strategic goals developed this year. 2013 will be a year of execution for those goals.

The five focus areas of the strategic plan are developing and implementing focused programs for member recruitment, identifying and replicating best practices and innovations, integrating technology to meet member needs, retaining

more members, and providing top-quality ...

The Board has approved the adoption of this strategic plan, and management has created an operational plan to carry out the strategy. My job is to make sure we’re on target for accomplishing these goals. There are benchmarks we need to meet, and we need to stay on budget in the process. We aren’t rigidly locked in to this process, however. We can retrench and adapt as circumstances warrant.

Anyway, the goals are so generic, it's hard to have any opinion about them. They're basically what ACBL has been saying for years.

I do like Don, though. I'm not sure how, but many years ago he learned who I was. We're not from the same district, so we only see each other at NABCs; maybe it was the year I made it to the finals of the GNT-C. Ever since then, he's always greeted me with a friendly "Hi, Barry!" whenever he passes me.

I know Don from a while back.

Good guy, good judgement, very sharp.

My concern is the fact that he has a very limited tenure and the President of the ACBL is largely a ceremonial position. I think even the best individual would have difficulty effecting change with so little real authority.

Heh, Barry, Don's one of those who remembers the name of everyone he's ever been introduced to. It wouldn't surprise me that he knows, by sight and name, at least 1000 of the 2000 or so people at a Nationals. Having said that, I'm not from his district, either, but after you direct 10 Penticton Regionals, people in District 19 learn your name...

I am somewhat in favour of [long] term limits for BoD people, as I think 33 years is a bit much (see the next article down); but for some, including Don, I'm glad we don't. He does the PR part of the job, at least, brilliantly. And yes, primarily President of the ACBL == Chairman of the BoD, and while that is an important position, the BoD tends to set management goals, and it's the CEO's job to interpret and implement those goals.
