I had an e-mail about this hand the other day, only the minor suits were reversed, and I was a passed hand. Then I bid 2H. But as a non-passed hand, and with only minimal support for partner's suit, I can only double.

As a matter of interest, I would like the nfb 2H bidders what their range for this bid is.

Hi Ron,

I didnt' bid 2 on this hand becasue that nfb is not standard. But, playing equality, I have three ways to show after the 1 overcall.

I can bid 2 which shows 4+ hearts, and a balanced or semi-balanced hand. Forcing to 2.

I can bid 2 to show 5+ hearts, and forcing, but only to 2.

I can bid 2 which is negative free bid.

But in my case, the bidding can die in 2 after the 2 5+ showing bid, and it can die in some other low level contracts as well. So 2 transfer is not game force. This stretches the range of the "forcing" 2 so the negative free bid can be lighter than normal.

On some auctions (such as this one), we give up the natural raise to two of a minor. But we still have several ways to raise the first minor (fit jumps to three level, cue-bid, 2NT - ultra weak raise or game forcing, preemptive jump raise, and showing a balanced hand pattern then supporting.). I thought I would miss the direct raise to two of a minor, but so far, so good.

Jimmy, I would expect

1S (2C) 2H

to show

xx

AQJxxx

Qxx

xx

or

xx

AQJxx

Kxx

xxx

Else it is too hard for opener, and a courtesy raise may well put you into an unmakeable 3 level contract to lose 5 imps. Similarly what if next hand raises? How is opener to judge whether to bid game or not in a sequence such as

1C (1S) 2H (3S) if you have such a wide range; so to Frederick's "Pfff", I say "Double Pfff".

Martin I would X on the hand to show 4/5 H.

If you play NFB, you can't dbl. dbl then what would you do in the next round? 3H which is better than direct 2H? pass which hides your AKTxx forever? The purpose to play NFB is to be able to bid this kind of hand (close to minimum) freely.

"If you play NFB, you can't dbl. dbl then what would you do in the next round?"

Huh? I fail to find any logic in the quoted comment. Next round after what? I do play nfb, and I do X with this hand. If partner makes a minimum bid I pass or correct 2C to 2D. Even if he bids 2H I am not raising on a 9, (count them), loser hand.

The "purpose" of a nfb, or any bid for that matter, is to give partner some indication of your holdings. Bidding 2H is an overstatement of that.

playing nfb doesn't mean you can't double this hand... a double is simply a normal, every day negative double or a game force somewhere...

OK. I didn't make it clear. I meant w/ nfb, you can't dbl AND bid 2/3H later. if you dbled, would be hidden forever unless pd has 4 s.
