When he has three diamonds, he has zero or one spade, so partner could be 54 or 64 in the pointed suits. And this is the kind of auction where they could easily have 17 opposite 8. Ugly isn't it? But I would call it pushy rather than insane. This is a tough sequence for the opps to double, since they have limited hcp and going wrong costs them a huge swing at imp pairs.
