While 2N gets the value and approximate shape right, we can have our cake and eat it too by opening 1♣ and reversing into 2♦. This can also lay a solid predicate for a minor suit slam auction every so often. In real life this hand will get opened 2NT fairly often - maybe 20 to 40% of the time (esp. if NV, 2NT is down only 50 a trick). I am a MUCH better dummy player than pard, 2NT can be a useful preempt, and even lum-lum pard knows the basic follow up transfer bidding sequences so we can get to our easy major suit or 3NT games. Cyberyeti Posted November 19, 2012 Report Share Posted November 19, 2012 You might also want to play 3N rather than 4M opposite QJxxx, Jxxxx, Jx, J, you are much more likely to play 4M if you open 2N. The advantage of 2N is you won't hear 1♣-(2♠)-P-(3♠). Does partner have xxx, Jxxxx, xxx, xx or Axx, Jxx, xxxx, Jxx ? IMO 2N is not hideous, but not best.
