Flannery

Multiple plans:

1) To make sure I know the range we are using for our Flannery. (OP edited to show range)

2) To make sure I know whether we have variances, other than the usual 4-5 in the majors. (OP edited to show no variance, now.)

3) Alert

4) Explain, according to our agreements for the opening 2 bid (rather than naming it.)

Then,

5) Start with 2N and see if our methods, whatever they are, can provide some clues.

6) Eventually aim toward (most likely) what level of Notrump we want to be in.

The Diam void scares me.

Thank you for being the one to explain what 4meant. What scares me is the amount of space consumed without differentiating between eleven and 15. Still want to be in 4NT or 6NT, but don't know if 4NT is to play, invitational, or some kind of Wood.

:P Opening a Flannery 2 with 4-5-0-4 OR 4-5-4-0 is not needed as a fix just because we are using the forcing 1NT response.

Over:

1-P-1NT-P

one can just bid 2 of his/her 4 card minor. THEREFORE, a 2 opening should be used as a 'picture' bid - possibly 11 or 12 HCP or alternatively 13 to 14 HCP.

Using the lower range kinda makes more sense to me. So, if that is the case, let's aim low with 4 and settle for game on this sad little misfit hand.

Looking at the other thread, the OP edit is practically MI. The idea of Flannery is to handle hands that are too weak for a reverse, thereby plugging a small system hole. It seems a little silly to start a bidding quiz based on the misuse of a convention; it reminds me of 32519's Puppet Stayman threads.

Give up on flannery ASAP, since I would never agree to play this, lets start with 2NT and pretend partner opened a weak 2. This will strenghten my position on the discussion for dropping it.

I know where this sentiment comes from.

I have seen Flannery used effectively, though not exactly as originally published, by some very successful pairs. In their capable hands, and with careful discussion of patterns, ranges, and continuations ---it is a good thing.

It is not a good thing for us because we can't make room for it. We used to be just plain Flannery haters when it wasn't fashionable to be Flannery haters. Now that it is in vogue to dislike it, we find people using it better.
