If you double, or bid 1♥ (I'm not seeing any other bids you can make), your LHO will bid 2♦. What actions do you take?

I bid 1♥ and then DBL, i have a perfect hand that would overcall and then double.

 

I don't have the strength for DBL and then bidding ♥ later, or doubling later.(assume rho raised to 3♦ ) But if i started DBl i would obviously either pass or DBL again. (personally i pass if pd couldn't bid anything, because i am scared to defend 2♦ doubled)

 

 

Also defending 1♦ or 2♦ with void trump and not being able to play it thru, is painfull most of the time.

Partner might have up to 14 points with no suitable bid over 1 ♦, however. I'm hesitant to bid 1♥ because partner might have 4 spades, making spades a (most likely) superior contract.

I don't like having a void because partner will choose to defend quite often. Even though my double doesn't promise any diamonds, he will hope for more than zero. But the rest of my hand is ok defensively and the other choices are unattractive. I certainly don't want to sell out to 2♦.

I would always double the first time. After that I was thinking maybe it's right to pass even though it's weird, we know partner has some values and didn't bid the first time, it seems like he will often have diamond length and pass over our second double. Maybe it matters whether we play X of 2D would have been penalty or not. I would probably double a second time without even thinking about it irl though lol.

That is good jLogic you are showing. Wouldn't a 1♠ bid over 1♥ show 5?

I assume we are talking about when the opener passes 1♥ bid.

 

I don't know the encouragement part, but i would bid spades if i have 4 of them and values to make a bid after my pd overcalled/balanced. Unless we have a rule that says 1♥ overcaller can not have 4 spades. I think doubling wins when pd doesn't have enough values to bid over 1♥ and when he has 4 or more spades, but thats something i am not worried about, if he is that weak, which i highly doubt when i have only 11 and openers pd passed and opener ddidn't do anything over my 1♥, and if opener bids again that will usually give us another shot to find our spade fit or club fit, because my hand is suitable to take another action after starting 1♥. As i said earlier i may not be as comfortable as i am after 1♥, to take another action had i started double.

the risk of missing a spade game looms very large here and by starting

with 1h vs x we are taking a big chance for little positive reason. Our shape

screams double and the only way a heart suit of that quality finds its way in

print is for someone to show it in a forum like this. IRL I would not have any

trouble passing over 2d after my initial x but I would have grave concerns

if I had chosen a 1h balance and would be strongly tempted to now x (ie

do what i should have done the first time). P will know the second x was made

under duress and they will probably "underbid" their hand by a significant amount

which is exactly what we fear might happen.

If i doubled first, I don't think you can double again, as that surely shows more points. I think that is quite important so that partner can bang down 3N over the second double.

 

I am totally with mr Ace that 1H then double should not show extra values, its just how you show this shape.
