After a Light Opening

Personally, I'd pass

Partner could easily have three card support and a 5 count

Yes, shortage in the opponent's suit is nice. Those club honors aren't going to pull their full weight, however, I don't find 3 let alone 4 very attractive.

I can't imagine doing anything other than pass over 2.

A friend of mine who has been playing this game longer than me and with greater success always preaches that one should bid one's own cards. Your own hand doesn't justify taking any action, so don't take one.

Looks like full values to my eye but it would be 1 or 1 in systems familiar to me. Is 1 the systematic opening on this shape and, if not, what were you purporting to have? (Basically I'm trying to assess whether hrothgar's assertion that partner might have 5 points and 3 spades is actually true...)

This was the point I was raising when I added the 1 opening to hrothgar's list of unattractive actions.

Going a step further: The hand is an opening bid; but, if system required me to open 4=4=4=1 in the highest and worst suit, I would conveniently lose a quack and pass it anyway ---then at some appropriate time recommend that we change our style.

As for the question of what to do next on the OP auction: nothing other than passing would come to mind. It is what we tend to do with a minimum opening which has been raised to 2.

Maybe you should edit your first post?

Was 2 forcing? In this case I try 4 .

If 4 promises more in your partnership, or if 2 was a NFB, 4 is enough.

Whatever I did, the last answer is pass.

I don't like 4 with this flat hand, but don't like much 3 or 4 either. I think I would go with 4.

Over 5 something odd happened, are the opps from former yougoslavia? this will usually mean we did our best to stay out of slam, but probably 5 is safe or else they would put the pressure before.

Partner had AKxxx Jxx Kxx xx so 4 makes, but not 5. I passed 5 and partner doubled it. The other table didn't open the 4441 hand and stopped in 2.

The delayed 5 bid was made with J10 109xx 10x QJ10xx. Not sure why they didn't bid immediately.
