playing with very few trumps

Recommended Posts

Since I didn't want to go off topic in another thread, I'll start a new one with an interesting (and probably funny) topic: what's the smallest fit you've ever played in, and what was the result? :D

For me last week I played again in a 3-1 fit (2) after a bidding misunderstanding, I went -4 (-200) but the other tables made 4 in the other direction for a great score :D

I can only remember one hand where I played with less than 4 trumps (see below), even after psychic bids I usually have a 4 or 5 card fit... I also remember a 2 ReDoubled in a 3-2 fit where I made +2 for lots of imps, since there was no slam available :P

My absolute record is 4 in a 2-1 fit. My partner didn't understand my bid and passed :( I went off a lot, while we had 6 or so available. These ultra-mini-moysian fits can't allways work out fine ;)

I had a chance to play in a 2-0 4 contract once.. but in pass out seat, opponent with seven spades just couldn't help himself and doubled me... needless to say I retreated to our safe diamond slam and wanted to send our helpful opponent a flower basket.

I played a 1-1 3!d after my pickup partner passed a cue bid. Opps discovered a crossruff for 12 tricks. Appologies and explanations ensued. I think my partner had been beat up pretty badly in similar instances in the past. She chewed on that result for a couple of hands before saying "Thank you p, you are very nice".

Hi,

the first day i played bridge , never saw the game before and at first tought one had to bid the number of tricks on a suit he had or something close to that :P .

My partner bid Michaels 2 after opps 1 , all passed, he had no , i had 1 ;)

His comments were " there wont be system avaible where this woud be a natural bid, partner" to wich i replied "and these non-natural bids are commenly used in bridge?" to wich my partner said" welcome to the game , i hope u will enjoy it and get better soon"

:P I really try to forget these things... This happened almost 30 years ago....

In a serious money bridge game, RHO opened 3D and I held a monster 6-6. I bid 4D, partner bid 4(of wrong suit), and I persisted with 5D, which seemed to me to say, "Pick a different suit". Partner was confused and passed. So we played in our 0-2 fit down 6 when slam in one of my suits was cold.

I think everyone has stories like this. The most interesting would be Contracts that actually made

I've played in 3-1 fits and once in a 2-2 fits, but these contracts are usually not big successes. But once I played in a 4-1 club fit (does that count as a small fit?) in 1C redoubled, making 4. I expected a good score, but it wasn't, we could make a lucky slam, and people were bidding it.

I'm sure there were other times, but the one I remember is the 2-0 split where partner knew what he was doing.

Bidding went:

2, alerted as 4-4 in the majors or better, 11-15 hcp, passed out.

Partner had a balanced hand with two diamonds, five clubs, and no points. I had a diamond void and maybe 12 crappy points.

Partner figured we weren't vulnerable, they have game, even down 8 should be a good board, and if they doubled he could run. He was right, although we actually took 2 tricks.

"For me last week I played again in a 3-1 fit "

Frederick you are a wimp. Real men play in 1-1 fits.

Playing a precision pair we were playing that a jump bid showed

a weak hand in that suit

or a weak hand in the suit above

or a 4441 hand with a s/ton in that suit

So it goes (1C) 2H and I hold a s/t H and not much; well clearly he has a weak 2 in H. Wrong! Pd was 4144. And we played in our 1-1 fit. Can't remember wherther this was good, bad or indifferent. Both opps felt they had too many H to make a takeout X rofl!

Besides the 3-3 I posted making 5 I Don´t have anything from myself worth it.

My opponents once played in the 1-1 after a passed hand made a splinter 4, wich his partner though couldn´t be a real splinter since passed hand (could it be with passed hand?).

A couple of years ago, in the spanish matchpoints festival there was this auction:

2*-2NT

3*-4

2: alerted as multi

3: alerted as maximum with .

You can imagine this was a 2-2 fit, but when no trump was led it eventually made 10 trick, sadly it was neraly a bottom anyway.

Another one from my father long ago, he opened 3 Alder (any 7+ suit headed AKQ), and it was passed by his partner who had nothing at all, playing in a 0-1 fit, it went 9 off for -450, who won just 1 imp when his team mates stayed in 4 +2.

Well, this hand is quite famous, and helped Germany lose its 1989 Venice Cup semi-final against the Netherlands.

Von Arnim opened in second position 3, normal preempt or a solid club suit, van der Pas doubled, Zenkel answered 4 (which would have been pass or correct in the absence of a double), Schippers doubled and everyone passed. -1700.

I've played many hands in NT, when I had no trumps at all...

Ok, seriously, I think I've played in silly fits but got bad results. The only time I got a decent result was when I was in a "run-out" sequence from 1NT-X and stopped on the way in 2 planning to redouble if the opps doubled. They didn't, and left me in a 3-2 fit. It went 3 off non-vulnerable but was a decent result at MP.

Actually I like this convention (3 = natural or solid ), but it shows you that you need to agree on auctions like this. I am sure the pair in question would no longer have such gaps in their understandings.

A classic is of course after you open a Multi, opponents bid your suit and partner assumes you have the other, bids it and gets doubled. Oh joy.
