1c-2d nat

How about:

2nt = hearts

2h = asking usually balanced

Over 2h you can find out if partner has a 4M and what his shortness is (if any); you likely lack the space to get full shape but this is usually enough. Something like:

1c-2d-2h:

2s = hearts

2n = spades

3c/3h/3s = shortness with 6+ diamond

3d = 6+ diamond semi-balanced

Presumably after opener rebids 2h, the only possible trump suits are diamonds or responder's 4M (if any) so you can cue bid next.

Is this with a criss-cross Major transfers scheme? Esp 1H->Spades and 1S->Hearts?

That response scheme puts a lot onto no-5xM hands to do something informative/useful.

Like this 2D.

I like 2M rebid to ask support AND how good are your Diamonds, rather as Ogust to a weak2:

step 1: no goods to show;

step 2: Qxx support, not 2-tops in Diamonds; etc.

After 1-P-2:

With one partner, 2M is 5+ cards (alpha).

2N sets up a "4-card suit transfer sequence":

3 = 4

3 = single suited

3= 4

3= 4

Generically 1-P-2m:

2M 5+ cards (alpha)

3m = single suit

3om = 4

3 = 4

3 = 4 om.

With another partner we adjust the 1N, 2 and 2 responses to 1 as follows:

1N = single suited clubs 6 + or 5+ 4+ diamonds ( dominant) Denies 4-card majors.

2 = one or both 4-card majors (not 4441)

2 = exclusion stayman (=; =; 2N=both; 3/=4405/50 respectively.

Opener rebids 2M with 5+ but uses 2 with 5+/4 majors.

2 = balanced hand or single suited or 5+/4+ 2-suiter ( dominant). Denies 4-card major.

(We use 1-P-2N to show 4M=6+m with 3 relay steps showing &, &, &, &).

What do you use the 2M and 2NT responses for? Could you afford to play 2 = one-suited; 2 = 4 spades, 5+ diamonds; 2 = 4 hearts, 6+ diamonds; 2NT = 4 hearts, 5 diamonds? That would allow you to get back to symmetric levels, which is usually a pretty good indicator of a comfortable auction even if you are not using relays.

what is a good system to answer 1 (strong)-2 (nat 5+, maybe 5-4M, otherwise 6+)

I play several schemes depending on my partner's preferences:

1) 1 - 2 = 8-10 Balanced (may have a weak 5cd minor) per Rodwell

2) 1 - 2 = 8+ and 5+ Transfer-like. Now 2NT is Staymanish and 3 is Beta

3) 1 - 2 = 8+ one or both minors, denies a 4cd major

You pays your $ and take your choice ...

Whoops, you asked about 5+:

1
- 2
Transfer showing 5+

2
= Staymanish

2M = Alpha (Support Asking)

2NT asking if 4M

Does anyone know the Meckwell continuations after 1C-2D (8-10 bal)? Also any thoughts on follow ups after 1C-2H (11-13 bal) and 1C-2N (14+ bal)?

Berkowitz/Cohen Precision after 1(strong)--2(natural, GF, 5+ suit) (and also after 2 response, fwiw):

2/2 = natural, 5+ suit, triggers a natural auction

2NT = semi-natural, asking for more information about responder's hand (especially wrt to 4-card majors):

3 = 4-card suit

3 = 4-card suit

3 = "rebid" of minor

3 = 4-card holding in other minor

After this, if opener "accepts" the transfer into the major, we've confirmed our major suit fit on the three level and can start cuebidding. Additionally, the strong club opener could RKC or make non-RKC slam tries in either of responder's suits directly over the 3x rebid.

If you like to play Precision and want to keep it pretty simple and natural-ish while avoiding the "jamming" problems of 1--2minor auctions, this is a pretty good system.
