And another +710. Anyone to blame for this one?[hv=pc=n&s=skha52da74cakqj54&n=saj95432hqd863c97&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=pp2cp2dp3cp3sp3np4sppp]266|200[/hv]

i don't know about the bidding, but the play must have been pretty hot.

Sorry, I put the South and West cards in on this one by mistake. Duly amended.

It's a decent but not stellar slam on a diamond lead. What was 2 ? (and if negative, was there a second negative available over 3) I would like to be able to give some sort of suit positive or semi positive to 2 with this type of hand.

I think I'd move over 4, AQJxxx/AQxxxxx and a singleton or the 10 is enough to make 7 decent.

Blame the guy on lead. Do you really want to play 6 after a diamond lead? How is this slam decent if the Queen of spades is not doubleton?

6 Club is better- but this time a trump lead may give you more then one headache.

Q doubleton or the hand with Qxx/10xxx following to 3 clubs.

6 on a trump lead is worse than 6 on a diamond lead I think.

This time missing slam is not ridicoulous, but why is north bidding 2 with 7 good spades?

Exactly. North has to bid his spade suit as a positive or make some other natural call. Many players use a 3 response to show a hand with KQTxxx of spades and out, in which case the 3 bid is not available for a hand like this one. But North should show his long suit immediately.

I suppose it might be a system violation to bid 2 as a positive response if it requires 2 of the top 3 honors or some such suit requirement. And fudging the requirement because of compensating length might lead to problems (here, opener would assume that the partnership had the A, K and Q of spades). But if 2 followed by 3 and 4 is the proper way to bid this hand, then South cannot pass 4.

I'm blaming North but it's only for about 25% with 75% being no-one's fault. AJxxxxx and not a 7222 shape, I'm showing a positive. 1 less spade or no J or a 7222 shape and I'll go via 2 negative.

I'd bid

2c 2s

3c 3s

3NT 4s

?

Holding 2 red Aces and AKQJxx and stiff King opposite a positive I think most souths would use RCKB as if AQxxxxx then 6 is where I want to be. If AQJxxxx then grand is on but I'm not finding it - though I'd expect a jump to 3 on that hand.

After finding only the A and no Q I'm not sure if I'd bid 6 or pass 5? I'd prbably bid 6 and hope that he has enough.

I would have done more as North, although it is very poor. We have at least two tricks for partner in clubs, and the heart queen is often worth something.

Playing total points, Seven Spades is the best contract.

If your pd had a 2 opener it wouldn't be as poor as it is.

If we need to blame someone for missing something that would be North since South did overbid already by 2 imo. I agree with Frances.

Hmm I didn't really look at souths hand that hard. I went on the presumption of a 2c opening. I wouldn't open that 2c either.

I think the guy who opened 2 was North on this occasion and it seems like the mystery selector has a point ...

:(

And I agree about 2 - give me an extra red queen and it's now borderline, but I would still open 1.
