How to bid a 2704 hand

Recommended Posts

Opposite a passed partner I like 3 over 1. Yes, I have a void and a side Ace but this isn't too far off the mark at this vlunerability. With 6 losers, I can afford to offer a 9-trick contract (Rule of 2).

You hold J9, KJTxxxx (7 of them), void, A8xx. Red vs White.

Auction is:

P-(1D)-1H (agree? other thoughts?)-(X)

1N-(2D)-2H (agree? other thoughts?)-(3D)

X-(P)-now what?

Thanks!

Hands to come later.

1 agree

2 disagree- show a hand with about opening strength- if partner had given a real positive then it would be a different matter then 3 is fine.

Now you have caused the damage you have to gamble back with 3

1/2 shows a good hand with 6+ hearts. So, like others, I dislike your choice. Red/white makes me chicken out with 3 , but 4 would be my second choice, 1 is wrong, passing ridiculous.

What to do now? Now, you have showed another hand to your partner then you actually hold and you need to guess right. Maybe you should throw a coin- I have no idea.

I also prefer to preempt immediately and this style is pretty much enforced by the follow-ups. For example, your 2 bid would show a good opening hand for me. If you are too scared to commit to the 3 level at these colours then simply make an immediate weak jump overcall. In any case, get your hand off your chest and then hand the auction over to the 3 opps at the table.

Bid 4 as soon as you can is my answer to this question. Some special events such as too much slam potential might make me rethink the tactic.

Your hand is not really special, only the vulnerability makes me think that 3 instead of 4 might be best, but it is close.

I like 3H over P (1D) at any colors. I want to give them the extra room not afforded by a 4H bid and hope they get to the wrong level in spades, since I have a bit of surprise defense.

Are your usual opponents spanish or something? :P, giving opps free space is not a good idea unless they suck.

1H is ok - I would go with 3H, the vulnerability stops me from bidding 4H, in the end this

is a tactical decison, even 2H can work out well. (*)

2H is ok - If you overcalled with 1H, you have to bid 2H, at one point in time you have

to start limiting your hand.

Now 3H - a 7420 hand is nothing partner can expect, he is a passed hand, I am not going to

defend 3Dx

(*) Factors which play a role, are your 1 NT opening bid, knowledge of opponents and so on,

maybe you get doubled in 2H / 3H, trying to go fishing is a valid tactic.

With kind regards

Marlowe
