squealydan
♠T.2♥-♦T.8.6.3♣A.K.Q.T.9.6.3 My partner doesn't play gambling 3NT (not that there's anything in its place, just he doesn't like the bid), and I picked up this collection, as dealer, nobody vulnerable, imp scoring. Thoughts?
the_clown
I would open 5♣
BunnyGo
I would open 3♣, even if I were playing gambling 3NT.
hrothgar
5♣ here as well...
billw55
It is highly probable that ops have a nice fit in either or both majors. But are they necessarily making game? Pre-diving with 5♣ feels overboard to me at equal vul. I will try 4♣.
nigel_k
5♣ for me too. There is some risk that nobody makes anything, but 4♣ is not enough unless your style is quite conservative.
Fluffy
the oppoents would be comforable to play in 4M, so lets not make them comfortable and open 5♣

kenrexford
I am not advocating or even suggesting anything as far as conclusions. I merely am making an observation. Let us suppose for the sake of argument that you open 1♣ with this hand. The risk seems to be that the opponents have an unimpeded auction to 4♥ or 4♠. This is true. However, if you open 1♣ and that does occur, the opponents may well run into an unexpected split in hearts (if that is the strain) and may well make assumptions about honor locations that prove inaccurate. If you open 1♣, you also have the possibility that this is your hand, in which case 3NT might be a successful end contract.
lalldonn
I would sometimes open 1♣ but usually 4♣. 5♣ seems like it will be down too much too often. Also if they overcall in a major, who is to say partner won't be quite thrilled with that as he doubles?
